Why Do People Throw Away Food? A Ukrainian Engineer Proposes an Innovative Solution

 Every year, millions of tons of food and organic waste end up in landfills around the world. Despite advances in recycling technologies, the emergence of new sustainability initiatives and growing public awareness campaigns, food waste remains a persistent global challenge.

Yurii Khomuilo, a Ukrainian engineer and inventor currently based in the United States, believes that the root cause of the problem lies not in technology but in human behavior. Motivated by this conviction, he has developed an innovative concept designed to reduce unnecessary food disposal and transform the way households handle organic waste.

The Origin of the Idea

According to Khomuilo, the idea first emerged during his university years after he moved away from home to study in a city.

“The trigger was a very specific moment. My roommate threw away a perfectly good piece of beef that had been purchased only two days earlier. It had changed color slightly in the refrigerator, but it was still fresh and safe to eat. He simply threw it away. For me, that was shocking.

I grew up in a rural environment where organic materials are utilized completely. We had compost pits, livestock, and gardens – nothing was wasted. I witnessed firsthand how animals were raised, cared for, and ultimately became part of the food chain. I always believed the least we could offer in return is respect for their lives and for the resources involved.

Standing there and looking at that piece of beef in the trash, I realized it was not just food. It represented a life, resources, labor, and energy that had been used without purpose. Worse, it would not even return to nature – it would simply decompose in a landfill surrounded by plastic. I felt that many people share similar values but lack practical ways to act on them. That is when I began searching for a solution.”

The Concept Behind the Invention

Khomuilo has developed a device designed to process organic food waste directly at home or within commercial facilities. The technology concept has already been formulated, Khomuilo has submitted a patent application, and detailed engineering work is underway. The next stage involves building and testing a physical prototype.

The invention is based on an innovative process. Organic waste is mechanically shredded, moisture is extracted under pressure, and the system automatically packages the remaining dry material in a biodegradable casing containing plant seeds.

“To create something new, you first need to break the old down into its smallest components,” Khomuilo explains. “The device operates autonomously and does not require external infrastructure. Organic waste is processed where it is generated and returned to the soil in a convenient form.”

His long-term ambition goes further. Ideally, he envisions a portable bioreactor capable of processing organic waste while simultaneously generating energy – creating a fully closed-loop system. For now, however, his focus remains on preventing food waste from ending up in landfills and making sustainable behavior effortless for consumers.

One of the key distinctions between Khomuilo’s concept and existing composting systems is the final product itself.

“Most current solutions produce compost – a wet, heavy material with a strong odor that still requires handling. My device creates a finished product: a dry briquette packaged in a biodegradable bag containing seeds. You can hold it in your hand, carry it in a bag, bury it in the soil, or leave it in a flower bed. It offers a completely different level of convenience.”

The Human Factor Behind Food Waste

Khomuilo argues that many food waste solutions fail because they overlook consumer psychology.

“People want products that function like an iPhone – simple, attractive, and convenient. Many consumer-grade composting systems offer limited convenience. They provide neither convenience nor a positive user experience. That psychological barrier is often underestimated.”

In his view, the greatest challenge in reducing food waste is not technological but behavioral. Many people are unwilling to sort waste, manage compost, or deal with unpleasant odors and maintenance requirements. While many environmental initiatives attempt to change human behavior directly, Khomuilo believes such efforts often struggle to produce lasting results.

“My technology takes a different approach. Instead of trying to change people, it adapts to their existing behavior. You place food waste into the device, and it does the rest automatically. There are no odors, no pests, and no additional effort. Instead of trash, the user receives a useful product.”

A Consumer-Focused Solution

The engineer designed the technology primarily for households.

“I see it as a household appliance, much like a dishwasher. You purchase it, install it in your kitchen, and use it every day. It does not require special infrastructure or agreements with municipal services. It simply becomes part of the modern home.”

His commercialization strategy initially focuses on the consumer market (B2C), followed by expansion into multifamily residential properties and food-service businesses through B2B partnerships.

Khomuilo believes the United States represents the most promising market for the technology.

“America generates more than 100 millions tons of food waste annually, while many states are actively implementing initiatives and regulatory measures aimed at reducing organic waste sent to landfills. American consumers are accustomed to paying for convenience and are willing to invest in household technologies that solve real problems.”

Potential Global Impact

Khomuilo emphasizes that the invention is intended to address broader systemic challenges rather than merely offering another waste-processing technology.

“The technical side of waste management has largely been solved. We already have composting, recycling, and disposal technologies. Yet people continue to throw food into the trash because it is easier and because they do not see the connection between a discarded piece of food today and environmental consequences decades from now.

My device makes the right action the easiest action. People do not have to think about it, convince themselves, or overcome discomfort. They simply use the device. When sustainable behavior becomes effortless, it eventually becomes habitual.”

Beyond influencing consumer behavior, the technology could reduce pressure on municipal waste infrastructure. By diverting organic waste from general trash streams, cities could potentially reduce landfill volumes, transportation requirements, and methane emissions generated by decomposing organic matter.

Khomuilo argues that a significant portion of municipal waste-management expenses is devoted to transporting materials that could otherwise be processed at the source and converted into useful products. Decentralized waste processing, he says, can reduce this burden without requiring large-scale facilities or new collection programs.

The broader objective is cultural as much as environmental.

“When people see that their food waste can become something useful – a biodegradable packet containing seeds that can be planted – they begin to view waste differently. This is not environmental activism. It is about respecting the natural cycle from which we all come and to which we ultimately return.”

Looking Ahead

Khomuilo has already established connections with sustainability and innovation programs in Washington State. His project has been confirmed eligible for NextCycle Washington, and preliminary discussions are underway with potential partners specializing in environmental compliance and circular-economy initiatives.

Once the prototype is completed and validated, he plans to secure investment and move toward commercial deployment.

If successful, the invention could offer a practical example of how engineering innovation, behavioral design, and sustainability can work together to address one of the world’s most persistent environmental challenges: food waste.
