Westcliff University Opens First Campus in Canada to Help Bridge the Talent Gap in Toronto’s Surging Tech Hub

Grand Opening Puts MIST Graduates at the Center of the GTA’s Growing Demand for AI, Cybersecurity and Smart Manufacturing Talent

IRVINE, Calif. & TORONTO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Westcliff University, a global leader in career-focused higher education, celebrates the grand opening of its first Canadian campus, expanding its footprint at a pivotal moment for one of Canada’s most pressing economic challenges: the deepening shortage of highly skilled technology workers.

Situated inside the original IBM building in Markham, Ontario—and co-located with ventureLAB‘s 50,000-square-foot innovation hub—the campus offers regional employers a direct pipeline of graduates trained in AI, cybersecurity and smart manufacturing through the university’s Master’s in Information Systems Technology (MIST) program.

Developed in direct collaboration with Ontario’s tech industry and guided by Westcliff’s Program Advisory Committee of Toronto-based leaders, the MIST program equips mid-career professionals and emerging graduates with specialized expertise in cybersecurity and enterprise risk management, AI and machine learning applications, smart manufacturing and industrial technology and information systems strategy. The program features eight-week course cycles with in-person and online options for working professionals, an Innovation Sandbox where students tackle live business challenges alongside industry practitioners and a continuously evolving curriculum designed to keep pace with shifting labor market demands.

“Toronto’s employers need graduates who are ready to contribute on day one in AI, cybersecurity and smart manufacturing — and that is exactly who our MIST program produces,” said Dr. Anthony Lee, president and CEO of Westcliff University. “We built this program in direct collaboration with the local region’s tech leaders because workforce-ready education must be designed with employers and around the realities of working professionals. Our programs are structured so students can pursue their passion, advance their careers and earn their degree without stepping away from the workforce. Toronto’s continued growth depends on a continuous supply of highly skilled talent and Westcliff is committed to helping deliver it.”

By co-locating the campus within ventureLAB’s Markham innovation space, students have access to a hub that has supported more than 4,000 companies and serves as a key driver of technology investment and entrepreneurship in the region.

“Westcliff University’s presence at ventureLAB strengthens the talent pipeline essential to scaling globally competitive ventures in Canada. By co-locating within our innovation space, this partnership creates a direct bridge between specialized talent and high-growth companies, driving the innovations that power Canada’s knowledge-based economy,” said Hugh Chow, CEO of ventureLAB.

The greater Toronto area, North America’s third-largest tech hub and widely dubbed “The Silicon Valley of the North,” faces acute talent gaps in AI and machine learning, smart manufacturing, cybersecurity and cloud-native engineering. With more than 414,000 tech workers, AI-related job postings surging 28% year-over-year entering Q4 2025, and 48% of Canadian IT hiring managers planning to expand their teams in 2026, closing this gap is necessary to scale Canadian innovation opportunities.

“Our local business leaders have been clear about what they need: Graduates with specialized, immediately applicable skills in the fields driving our region’s growth,” added Markham City Mayor Frank Scarpitti. “Westcliff’s MIST program was built around those exact requirements and having that pipeline right here in Markham means our employers can access the talent they’ve been asking for.”

In partnership with the Trade Commissioner of Ontario to help address regional labor and skills gaps, Westcliff is among the few international institutions approved to operate in the area—bringing a curriculum purpose-built around the skills required by greater Toronto area employers.
