New Cosmos and partners developed the Laser Gas Visualizer, an AR-based system designed to help inspectors detect gas leaks faster and more safely.
— New Cosmos Electric Co., Ltd. is pleased to announce the joint development of the Laser Gas Visualizer, a new AR-based laser system designed to help inspection teams visualize gas leaks in real time and improve both safety and efficiency in the field. The project brings together ENEOS GLOBE Corporation, Tokyo Gas Engineering Solutions Corporation, and NeoRealX Inc. in a collaboration focused on a longstanding industrial challenge: making faster, clearer decisions when hazardous gases cannot be seen by the human eye.
Across natural gas networks and chemical plants, even a small leak can create serious risk. For decades, identifying the source and extent of those leaks has often depended on the trained judgment of experienced inspectors. As infrastructure ages and the number of highly experienced technicians becomes harder to replace, the need has grown for tools that can turn complex readings into something more immediate and intuitive. The Laser Gas Visualizer was developed in response to that need, converting remote laser detection data into a visual representation that can be understood in real time through augmented reality

At its core, the system is designed to support hands-free inspection work. Inspectors wear a helmet fitted with a laser gas detector and use their line of sight to scan an inspection area. Measurement data is then processed and overlaid through AR glasses, allowing a probable gas plume to appear within the operator’s field of view. Motion sensors help keep the image spatially aligned as the wearer moves, while on-screen and audio guidance are intended to help users maintain safe and effective inspection speed. Together, these features are meant to reduce guesswork and improve situational awareness, especially for less experienced operators.
Rather than focusing on precise three-dimensional concentration analysis, the Laser Gas Visualizer has been positioned as a practical inspection support tool built for rapid leak detection and quicker field decisions. That practical emphasis reflects the strengths of the partner organizations involved. New Cosmos Electric develops gas safety products in-house, from research and development through manufacturing and maintenance, while Tokyo Gas Engineering Solutions brings decades of LNG and energy service expertise, and ENEOS GLOBE operates across LPG and new-energy-related businesses. Complementing these industrial strengths is NEOREALX, a venture firm specializing in Extended Reality (XR). Their technology merges the physical and virtual worlds to create innovative experiences, providing the cutting-edge visualization capabilities essential for modern inspection needs.
“Gas safety has always depended on turning invisible risk into actionable information,” says Dr. Takeshi Abe, Lead Engineer at New Cosmos Electric. “Through this joint development, the goal is to support inspection teams with technology that makes leak detection more intuitive, more efficient, and more accessible in real working environments.”
For New Cosmos Electric, the announcement also fits within a much longer story. Founded in 1960, the company built its reputation through original sensor development and went on to pioneer major advances in gas safety, including early gas alarm and detection technologies that helped shape the industry in Japan. Today, the company continues to focus on gas detection, alarm systems, and related safety technologies for residential, industrial, and environmental applications.
Following field trials, the development partners plan to pursue early practical deployment of the Laser Gas Visualizer. Although the current work centers on methane and related inspection needs, the system may also be extended to other gases detectable through laser absorption techniques, including ammonia. That broader potential points to future applications across infrastructure, industrial operations, and energy systems, where faster interpretation can make a meaningful difference in daily safety work.
