LONGUEUIL, QC, Aug. 13, 2026 /CNW/ — From August 15 to 23, as part of the STRATOS (ICARUS) 2026 Campaign, five weather balloons will be launched from the Timmins Balloon Base in Ontario. They will carry five Canadian payloads, along with 15 experiments designed by high school students, to test new technologies, conduct scientific research, and collect measurements from the stratosphere.
The following Canadian university teams and organizations will participate in this year’s campaign:
- PolyOrbite, Polytechnique Montréal
- Mission SpaceWalker, University of Alberta
- InSpace, Carleton University
- LASSENA, École de technologie supérieure (ÉTS Montréal)
- Willi Lab, University of Lethbridge
- Science Timmins
- WIBCA Montréal (West Island Black Community Association)
The goal of the campaign is to provide students with a unique opportunity to design, build and test small payloads before they are launched aboard stratospheric expandable balloon systems to altitudes of up to 35km. It is a hands-on and enriching experience that helps develop skills in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
