
Personal AI assistants now perform tasks that individuals and corporate executives previously entrusted only to trusted human staff. AI Agent books tables and trips, handles correspondence, and coordinates the client’s schedule. This global shift from simple requests to decision-making tasks creates a qualitatively different level of vulnerability that current privacy architectures are unable to address.
The Convergence of Capability and Risk
Until recent times, AI assistants were tools that required human oversight at every stage of the decision-making process. Today, they are directly integrated into email systems, calendars, banking, and travel services. They operate autonomously and based on context that users may not fully understand. As a result, early adopters like CEOs, financial professionals, and HNW clients may face disproportionately high risks, where a breach of confidentiality could lead to reputational damage, legal liability, and financial consequences.
Just recently, in January 2026, Chat & Ask AI exposed hundreds of millions of private conversations, including suicide notes and requests for illegal activities. AI-powered browser assistants intercepted online banking credentials and medical data, violating legal requirements. Moreover, analysts predict that this year, AI agents will surpass human employees and become the primary source of internal corporate data leaks – which, you’ll agree, isn’t exactly good news for businesses.
The Multi-Agent Privacy Crisis
There are protocols that allow AI agents to exchange context between services in real time. This is convenient, but it poses an unprecedented risk to privacy. When one agent accesses your calendar, another accesses data from the CRM, and a third accesses financial reports, the entire system becomes dependent on a single control center. This makes it vulnerable: if this central server is hacked, an attacker could secretly tamper with data sources or commands. As a result, agents may start sharing confidential information, and no one will be able to stop it.
A couple of years ago, there was a case where a hidden query in an email led to a leak of information from previous conversations with an AI agent, because the system treated the new input and the historical data as identical context. Without session isolation and clear authentication rules, multi-agent systems gain too broad access to data. Simply put, agents end up with more privileges than necessary and can access various sources simultaneously without sufficient oversight.
Existing data protection rules are insufficient for AI agents. They require that data be used only for specific purposes, whereas AI agents constantly combine data to address new user tasks. The requirement to collect a minimum amount of data is also a hindrance, because AI assistants need constant information exchange between services to function effectively.
Data Minimization as Competitive Advantage
Most products collect far more data than is necessary to actually provide their services. Personal concierge services, for example, require only three categories of data: task-related preferences – which can include travel patterns, communication style, visa restrictions, and the context of the current request, such as location, dates, participants, constraints, and the history of past interactions related to specific tasks.
This approach excludes passive monitoring of behavior; in other words, no one tracks geolocation, listens in on the user’s surroundings, or monitors the screen. Such actions essentially turn assistants into surveillance tools. This approach protects users who have not given their consent from having third parties collect data about them and create profiles.
To enhance the user experience, systems are collecting more and more context, as this improves recommendations and response times. Each integration – such as a calendar, email, or CRM – seems safe on its own. But over time, the line between truly necessary information and surveillance becomes blurred. Multi-agent systems accelerate this process: agents transmit data between components over channels that haven’t been specifically secured, and a single agent with excessive privileges can compromise the entire chain.
Privacy Receipts as Infrastructure
Users can’t manage what they can’t see, so it makes sense to offer users Privacy Receipts – machine-readable, instantly verifiable records of what the AI assistant knows, why it knows it, and where the information came from. This is similar to bank statements.
Implementing this approach requires several key technical measures. First, infrastructure-level encryption with unique keys for each client, secure data transfer protocols, and the separation of confidential information from operational metadata. Second, role-based access control so that each service, agent, and operator sees only the data necessary to perform their tasks. Third, secure access logs, automated auditing, technical measures to ensure compliance with data retention rules, and special testing protocols for the operation of multiple agents.
This architecture allows users to find out what the system knows about them, whether they can correct or delete that data, and whether they can restrict certain uses of it. Without these mechanisms, transparency remains merely a buzzword and is virtually ineffective in practice.
The Coming Standard
Services that collect data but fail to make it understandable and manageable for users will face regulatory pressure and market consequences. In some countries, data protection authorities are already coordinating oversight of AI compliance, particularly in the financial sector. Companies that treat AI agents as full-fledged participants in business processes – that is, manage their rights, monitor their actions, and assess risks- will set a new industry standard.
Privacy for systems that manage human time, relationships, and capital must be structural, not merely an add-on.
