
Artificial intelligence has entered the mainstream faster than public understanding can keep up. Terms like AI, deep learning, VLMs, GenAI, and agentic AI are now used interchangeably across industries, marketing materials, and even technical discussions.
Yet each describes a very different technological era. When organisations cannot tell these apart, they risk misunderstanding capabilities, overlooking safety requirements, or making decisions based on inflated expectations rather than grounded reality.
To bring clarity back into the conversation, it helps to retrace the true progression of AI, from the earliest machine learning techniques to the emerging paradigm of agentic systems.
Classical Machine Learning – When intelligence was hand built
The earliest phase of AI relied heavily on human expertise. Engineers manually examined data, identified patterns, and coded rules or statistical relationships to create small, specialised models. Systems such as early fraud detectors or foreground/background separation tools worked efficiently in controlled environments, and because humans designed the logic, the behaviour of these models was easy to interpret.

Deep Learning – Letting models learn from data

Generative AI & VLMs – Understanding, describing, and creating
Generative AI marked the first time models could produce information rather than simply analyse it. Trained on vast amounts of text, images, audio, and video, these systems learned how to generate new content, complete missing information, and answer open-ended questions.
Large Language Models enabled humanlike conversation, while Vision Language Models connected natural language with visual understanding, allowing people to query images or videos in intuitive ways.
This era opened AI to everyone; no technical knowledge required. Yet despite their impressive flexibility, out of the box, most GenAI/VLM deployments are primarily prompt-reactive (responding to user requests). Agentic behaviour emerges when they’re embedded into a closed-loop system with tools, memory/state, and execution policies.
Agentic AI – Moving from predictions to autonomous systems
The newest and most misunderstood stage is agentic AI. Unlike earlier eras, agentic AI is not defined by a single model or algorithm. It is defined by systems capable of accepting a goal, devising a plan to achieve it, selecting the right tools or models, observing what happens, and adjusting their approach through iterative reasoning. In other words, an agentic system does not simply answer a question; it acts with purpose.
What distinguishes agentic AI is the closed-loop nature of its process: the system plans, acts, observes the outcome, learns from that feedback, and then refines its plan. Its “brain” may be a large language model, but its intelligence resides in how it orchestrates many tools and models toward a defined outcome. This is a step change from earlier AI eras, shifting the focus from isolated predictions to coordinated, goal-driven decision-making.
Why so many people misunderstand Agentic AI
The term has quickly become a buzzword. Many solutions billed as “agentic” are, in reality, traditional models wrapped in a scripted workflow, or GenAI capabilities framed as autonomous systems. Without the ability to independently plan, reason, select tools, and adapt through iteration, a system cannot be considered agentic. Mislabelling these technologies misleads buyers, distorts expectations, and obscures the safety principles required for genuinely autonomous systems.
The Critical Role of Human-in-the-Loop (HITL)
One of the most important lessons from today’s AI landscape, is that autonomy does not eliminate the need for human oversight. In fact, as AI systems gain the ability to act, human-in-the-loop supervision becomes more essential, not less.
There have already been public incidents where AI-assisted or agent-like tooling contributed to destructive actions (e.g. deletion/recreation of environments, or unintended data loss) and where ‘looping’ behaviours were observed in agent frameworks – often triggered by permissioning, ambiguous goals, or weak guardrails. These incidents happened because autonomy amplifies both capability and risk. Thus, ‘’self-learning’’ claims can be a red flag.
Solutions build with human-in-the-loop mechanisms ensures that irreversible or high-impact decisions are reviewed, validated, or approved by a human operator. They provide ethical judgment, contextual awareness, and accountability; qualities no autonomous system can fully replicate.
In sensitive environments such as security, safety, or critical infrastructure, this partnership between human judgment and machine capability is not optional; it is the foundation of responsible AI deployment.

Understanding how AI has evolved; from classical machine learning to deep learning, from generative models to agentic systems, is more than a technical exercise. It is essential for anyone seeking to adopt AI responsibly, especially in environments where accuracy, safety, and reliability matter.
Agentic AI represents a genuine turning point: a movement from isolated predictions to coordinated, goal-driven intelligence. But with this shift comes complexity, nuance, and the need for careful design. Until industry standards and safety frameworks fully mature, human oversight will remain an irreplaceable part of the process.
