Skills route AI agents to latest software documentation and frameworks to speed safer development of digital experiences
Odense, Denmark, 15th April 2026, Umbraco has enhanced the AI-compatibility of its open-source CMS platform by launching Backoffice Extension Skills, based on Anthropic’s Agent Skills
Anthropic launched Agent Skills in October 2025 and published the open standard in December 2025 under the Linux Foundation. Since then, Agent Skills have been widely adopted and work across Claude and other AI platforms
Commenting on the launch of Backoffice Extension Skills, Phil Whittaker, Umbraco Staff Engineer (AI), said, “We’re seeing a fundamental shift in how digital projects are delivered. AI is becoming the starting point for new projects and is where developers explore ideas. Backoffice Extension Skills ensure that when your team uses an AI assistant, the correct Umbraco knowledge is available.”
The Umbraco CMS platform is designed to be extensible, to facilitate digital project customisation. All of Umbraco’s backoffice extension points are registered, documented and supported, to ensure that organisations’ customisations remain robust.
Agent Skills work in a similar fashion to Umbraco backoffice extension points: guiding AI agents to the right information to allow them to complete tasks such as building dashboards, property editors, or customising the backoffice.
Skills are exposed via a standardised endpoint that can be called by AI tools including Claude, ChatGPT, or custom LangChain agents.
Importantly, Backoffice Extension Skills route AI agents to the most up-to-date Umbraco documentation, examples, and source code. This ensures that large language models and agents use the most current version of software, and modern frameworks when completing tasks.
Explaining the benefits of the open-source, extensible CMS architecture for agentic AI, Umbraco CTO Filip Bech-Larsen says, “Agent Skills mirror the way that Umbraco’s backoffice extension points work. Each backoffice extension point links AI Skills to the latest Umbraco documentation, source code, and examples. This supports safer development and positions Umbraco as one of the first major CMS platforms to deliver a comprehensive, agent-ready architecture.”
“Umbraco Skills for extending the backoffice is the first series of skills, built to support developers using AI agents for building and extending their digital projects.”
