Putting a foot on the ball: making sense of the GenAI revolution

By Paul Ward, President Global Network & CEO UK, Prose on Pixels (POP)

Itโ€™sย bonkers out there. Every day, a new Generativeย AIย (GenAI)ย product drops or a platformย emerges.ย Itโ€™sย an unrelenting,ย turbo chargedย tornado of informationย –ย some of it jaw-dropping, some ofย itย downright f*&k-me unbelievable.ย

I sometimes compare theย GenAIย revolution to the Covid pandemic: one minute, we were finding it weird seeing masked people queuing in Milan; the next, we were watchingย televisedย football games in empty stadiums and pretending strangers were family so we could walk to the one open shop together. The abnormal very quickly became normal.ย

Ifย youโ€™dย told me in 2022 that we couldย turnย aย simple idea,ย aย few textย prompts,ย andย an AIย workflowย intoย a finished video,ย Iโ€™dย haveย given the same puzzled lookย Iย gaveย the Milanese queuers. Now, the GenAI-empowered me challenges our tech teams that close toย anything should now beย possible if we (er, they) really think about it.ย Itโ€™sย become normal to manipulate an actorโ€™sย movementsย soย theyย don’tย need to come back to setย –ย or to have our language team convert my Geordie twang to Spanish and still sound like me.ย Weโ€™reย generating AI hatches in machine-learned fences and happily creating virtual pubs in our gardens likeย weโ€™veย been doing itย all ofย our lives.ย

And while Iโ€™ve beenย sitting thinking aboutย writing this (for way too long –ย should have gone to ChatGPT),ย doubtless many, manyย more nicheย –ย but potentially vitalย tools that couldย improve usย and allow us toย betterย serve clientsย creatively,ย or through improved efficienciesย – will have dropped,ย somewhere.ย With so much going on, freezingย with fearย would beย theย easyย reaction.ย But,ย Iโ€™mย sorry, youย canโ€™tย โ€“ย youย simplyย haveย toย giveย somethingย a go.ย

The biggest learningย weโ€™veย takenย so far is thatย you needย to be comfortable withย a flexible processย which canย deal withย periodicย failure,ย safely.ย We started off a bit rogue, but nowย weโ€™reย establishedย and soย every new tool needs to pass health checksย before it entersย ourย workflow. And when it does, it slotsย into a system that can pivot instantlyย shouldย weย findย an issue, orย if a clientย hasnโ€™tย whitelisted the techย โ€ฆย andย weโ€™reย thenย able toย carry on close to unhindered.ย Weโ€™veย found that flexibility,ย agilityย and a fair bit ofย “f*&k it, letโ€™s do it”,ย isย the only way toย go.ย

Asย thisย canโ€™tย just be a stream of consciousness โ€“ it needs something useful too โ€“ย hereโ€™sย how we approach our process (caveat:ย currently).ย

Ingesting new GenAI platforms into a well-oiled machine

We start withย monitoringย the chatter โ€“ and there is a LOT of it. We have a bunch of gloriously nerdy creative tech guys and gals, whoย follow the online chat likeย theyโ€™reย back inย theirย gamesย of world of warcraft.ย One thingย Iโ€™veย seen work well is having a shared tech/GenAI radar;ย a simple wayย to track the tools which you are looking at, considering and have in play. It avoids duplication, keeps things consistent, and helps us learn from each otherโ€™s successes. Our teamsย read throughย a lot of stuff โ€“ and as new things start to break through, they turn up asking for budget.ย

Weย willย thenย followย a streamlined, repeatableย approach:ย discover, trial,ย testย and adopt.ย ย ย

Discoveryย &ย Validationย

Onceย youโ€™veย looked through yourย various options,ย identifyย theย two or three GenAI tools you want to trial,ย ensure they will addย valueย to yourย workflows, and runย someย trialsย to test against real use cases.ย

Test, test, testย ย

Youย have toย be clear what you want the platform to do โ€“ and then make sure you test it for exactly that. You thenย have toย be willing toย make timeย forย yourย teams to play. We have run a lot of dual processes over the last 18 months, where we run a project traditionally likeย weโ€™veย always done, plus, at the same time trying it through a platform. Thisย somewhat stressesย the ops and finance teams at first, butย theyโ€™reย happier now asย weโ€™veย started to get into aย more steadyย rhythm.ย ย ย

Secure & Approveย

In parallel youย have toย makeย IT and Legalย your friend. They already had a tough job and now you are asking them to embrace very new, nascent technology and soย theyโ€™llย be uncomfortable.ย Bring them in and work with them through the manyย compliance checkย points, while keeping the process lean and focused.ย Weโ€™reย part of a bigger group, so the hard part starts onceย weโ€™reย ready to adopt; IT and legal are (rightly)ย probably ourย greatest challenge to ensuring security and compliance without unnecessary bureaucracy. I should add here that we have learned to work together very well and now have a processย thatย balances innovation with safety, enabling quickly and effectively integration of AI solutions.ย ย

Adopt & Scaleย

Ensure you understand how theย platformย makes itsย money โ€“ and so what kind of monthly charges you will be getting. I would recommend you multiply thisย a bit in the first few months as people inevitably play with what will be a fun new tool.ย ย ย

Change your processes to suitย ย

I think one of our greatest early learnings was weย canโ€™tย just jamย GenAIย into an existing, traditional process.ย The adoption ofย GenAI has brought so many โ€˜I never thought of thatโ€™ challenges to ourย makers, our business affairs and indeed, our lawyers. Your processesย will changeย –ย so youย have toย be flexible enough to allowย themย to do so without breaking down.ย

Be flexible โ€“ and willing to failย

As said above, youย mustย have a process which is strong enough to back a few nonstarters.ย Whatโ€™sย clear to me now is youย canโ€™tย just back one platform: depending on your goal, some are better than others. Some are brilliant at visualizing people, others at landscapes or room sets, and some are better for authentic movement or replicating products.ย Indeed, one of the firstย real challengesย we hit was how poorly AI recreated branded products.ย Promptย forย a perfume bottle and it would give it a good go, but there were always inaccuraciesย –ย and inย aย brandingย business,ย thatโ€™sย aย bloodyย bigย problem.ย ย

So,ย once we started mastering the art of the prompt, a lot of our R&D shifted to figuring out how to ingest digital twinsย and control how they sit within anย AIย createdย environment. That way, we could manage the true likeness of a product whilstย designingย the space around it. Like most things, the best way to capitalise on the GenAI revolution is to stay agile, flexible, and crucially agnosticย –ย switching models in and out to orchestrate the best tools for the job. One sizeย definitely doesย not fit all.ย

Thankfully,ย the majority ofย established platformsย arenโ€™tย standing still –ย theyโ€™reย all working hard to improve their output. Some are becoming more versatile, good enough for most tasks, and I can imagine there will be winners whereย a generalistย โ€˜good enoughโ€™ is acceptable for certainย types of businesses. And when itย isnโ€™t,ย thatโ€™sย whereย theyโ€™llย need a business like ours to do theย creative problem-solvingย whichย bridgesย the gapย (NB otherย brands and productsย areย available).ย

I will end with this; adopting GenAI can be intimidating, andย sadlyย there are way moreย bullsh*ttersย than experts out there, soย itโ€™sย tempting to keep your head down or bury it completely.ย However, I would urge youย to atย some point,ย justย put your foot on the ball,ย take a lookย aroundย and thenย have a go.ย My business hasย nowย repeatedย thisย processย a few times andย Iโ€™dย sayย weโ€™veย won enough to feel likeย weโ€™reย expertsย –ย butย weโ€™veย also burnt ourselves enough.ย ย I can confirmย it still really hurts when you do,ย but,ย you know what?ย Weโ€™reย gettingย way betterย at dealing withย it and for sure,ย weโ€™llย keep doing itโ€ฆthings are moving incredibly quickly and so weย have to.ย ย ย
