FREMONT, Calif., Sept. 2, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Power Knot Ocean, the market leader for onboard organic waste management solutions, announced today that it has installed multiple units of the LFC biodigester aboard Fred. Olsen Cruise Line. The deployment extends Fred. Olsen’s fleet-wide sustainability program, which already includes comprehensive waste sorting, single-use plastic elimination, and a stated commitment to protecting the environments its ships visit.
The LFC biodigester uses aerobic digestion to break down organic food waste into water, eliminating the need for traditional waste disposal methods and significantly reducing both operational costs and environmental impact. Unlike incineration or macerating systems, the LFC biodigester produces no harmful emissions and generates no waste stream requiring special handling.
“Fred. Olsen Cruise Line has built a genuine culture of environmental responsibility across their fleet, from sorting plastics, cardboard, and glass for recycling ashore to a reduction of single-use plastics throughout the guest experience,” said Iain Milnes, President of Power Knot. “Adding the LFC biodigester closes the loop on organic waste. It is the natural next step for an operator that takes these commitments seriously.”
Available in nine sizes, the LFC biodigester can process between 10 kg (22 lb) and 6,000 kg (13,200 lb) of food waste per day, making it a scalable fit for vessels of all sizes. Designed for integration into existing galleys or garbage rooms, it requires minimal crew training to operate. Operators typically recover their investment in less than two years through savings on waste handling, port disposal fees, and fuel.
The installation adds to a growing list of maritime operators worldwide that have chosen the LFC biodigester to meet MARPOL requirements and reduce their carbon footprint.
