LiCAP Launches Ultracapacitor Energy Storage Solutions for AI Data Centers

Rack-level systems deliver millisecond response to AI power transients and support bridge power

SACRAMENTO, Calif., Sept. 1, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — LiCAP Technologies Inc., a developer and manufacturer of advanced ultracapacitors and patented Activated Dry Electrode® technology, today announced its new Rack Level Ultracapacitor Energy Storage System engineered for the high-power, fast-response demands of AI data centers.

Building onto its ultracapacitor cells and modules, LiCAP is expanding its product portfolio including build-to-spec rack-level systems designed to respond within milliseconds to AI workload transients, voltage disturbances and other short-duration power events.

The rapid growth of AI computing is changing data center power requirements. GPU-intensive workloads can create sharp, sub-second changes in power demand that place stress on utility feeds, generators, UPS systems, and batteries. Ultracapacitors are designed for the high-power, rapid charge-and-discharge cycles needed to help stabilize these sudden load changes, complementing batteries and generators that support longer-duration energy needs.

LiCAP ultracapacitor systems are designed to provide more than one million cycles 15+ years of expected service life and near-zero maintenance, making them well suited for frequent high-power cycling.

“AI is changing the data center power equation,” said Richard Qiu, President of LiCAP Technologies. “The challenge is no longer only how much backup energy a data center has, but also how quickly and repeatedly the power infrastructure can respond to dramatic changes in load. Ultracapacitors address the high-power, short-duration demands that batteries alone were not designed to handle, making the two technologies highly complementary.”

LiCAP’s ultracapacitor systems are designed for several applications including:

  • AI power transient support and peak shaving: Rapidly delivers or absorbs power during sudden workload changes, reducing stress on primary power infrastructure
  • Voltage sag support: Responds within milliseconds to short-duration voltage disturbances
  • Bridge power: Supplies immediate power between grid interruption and the availability of longer-duration backup generation or storage
  • Shutdown Protection: Provides short-duration power to complete active data writes, preserve in-process data, and enable controlled server shutdowns during unexpected power interruptions
  • Battery Support: Handles high-power transient loads that can accelerate battery degradation

LiCAP’s rack-level systems can be tailored to customer specific voltage, power, energy, runtime and physical-integration requirements and integrated with a Cabinet Management System for real-time monitoring of system status, health and safety.

LiCAP’s ultracapacitors are enabled by the company’s patented Activated Dry Electrode® (ADE) manufacturing technology.  The dry-electrode manufacturing process eliminates NMP solvent and associated drying and solvent-recovery steps while supporting low internal resistance and leakage current for fast response, reduced energy loss and lower thermal stress.

LiCAP will showcase its ultracapacitor technology and products at Battery & Energy Storage Tech Europe in Barcelona from September 8–9, 2026, and The Battery Show North America in Detroit from October 12–15, 2026.
