Geniatech Wins 2025–2026 ePaper Innovation “Pioneering” Award for World’s First Full-Color E-Paper Partial Refresh Technology with Dynamic Visual Effects

Geniatech has won the 2025–2026 ePaper Innovation “Pioneering” Award for developing the world’s first full-color e-paper partial refresh technology with dynamic visual effects. Announced at the 4th ePaper Industry Innovation Conference, the breakthrough eliminates full-screen flashing during content updates while maintaining e-paper’s core performance advantages.

— Geniatech, a Shenzhen-based manufacturer of e-paper displays and embedded computing hardware, today announced that its Partial Refresh Special Effects Technology for e-paper displays has won the 2025–2026 ePaper Creativity and Innovation “Pioneering” Award at the 4th ePaper Industry Innovation Conference. The award was decided by a review committee formed by the ePaper Industry Alliance together with CINNO’s ePaper Insight and the Alliance’s executive council, and recognizes the submission as the world’s first full-color e-paper technology to combine partial refresh with dynamic visual transitions.

E-paper displays are widely used across retail, transportation, and education environments for their low power consumption and eye-friendly viewing experience. However, the technology has long carried a well-known limitation: updating on-screen content has typically required a multi-second, full-screen flash, with no way to refresh only part of the display. The constraint has generally been treated by the industry as an unavoidable consequence of e-paper’s underlying physics.

Geniatech’s engineering team developed an approach, built on an FPGA platform, that combines 8-bit grayscale template-mapped phase shifting with a dual-dimension lookup table algorithm. The method layers dynamic transition effects directly into the partial refresh process, allowing an e-paper screen to render animated transitions — including blinds, ripples, and gradients — confined to only the specific region where content is changing, while the rest of the display remains completely still.

The review committee noted that the technology breaks through the long-standing limitation of e-paper refresh being confined to full-screen, whole-display updates.

Performance Data

According to Geniatech, the technology was evaluated against e-paper’s established performance benchmarks to confirm that the innovation did not compromise the display’s core advantages:

  • Flicker was controlled to below 4 Hz, well under the threshold of human perceptibility
  • Ghosting remained at or below 0.8%, on par with conventional refresh methods
  • Power consumption in the refreshed area was reduced by more than 40%, with no additional energy cost introduced by the visual effects

Industry Recognition and Publication History

The technology was first shown publicly in August 2025 at the IOTE Shenzhen International Internet of Things Exhibition. Zuo Qiang, Secretary-General of the ePaper Industry Alliance, described the technology as a significant technical innovation that provides the e-paper industry with a new capability for building differentiated products.

In October 2025, the underlying research was published in the national-level journal Information Technology and Standardization under the title “Design of Dynamic Special Effects for Spectra 6 Full-Color E-Paper Screen Transitions Based on FPGA.” Throughout 2026, the technology has been presented at CES, ISE, Embedded World, and COMPUTEX.

Availability

The Partial Refresh Special Effects Technology is currently integrated into Geniatech’s full-color e-paper digital signage and full-color e-paper photo frame product lines. The company is showcasing the full product lineup at IOTE Shenzhen 2026, Hall 11, Booth 11B18, running August 26–28, 2026.
