Domains will become the center of an AI-built world

By Matt Overman, Chief Revenue Officer at Identity Digital

Artificial intelligence (AI) has prompted a major shift in how we interact online. In just a few years, this innovation has accelerated the pace at which ideas are formed, tested, and brought to market. This year, we will reach a true inflection point as AI’s ability to streamline technical workflows ushers in a new era for web development.ย

For decades, building an online presence for a business required a specific set of skills: UX design, web coding, andย a highย tolerance for trial and error. Many of these components are becoming automated,ย assisted, or fully handled by AI. A task that used to take developers months to complete can be done in a few clicks.ย Non-technical entrepreneurs and creators now have the ability to launch businesses at a rate the digital economy has never experienced before.ย

This innovation is creating a paradoxย whereย standing out is becoming exponentially harder as markets becomeย crowdedย and projects are launched faster. As a result, brand identity is becoming the primary differentiator. Entrepreneurs are increasingly turning to the most foundationalย componentย of online identity to stand out: domain names.ย

Brand positioning takes center stageย

With AI now handling much of the technical heavy lifting, early-stage founders are redirecting their energy toward brand identity and positioning. As a result, there has been aย subsequentย shift in focus from web development to brand development.ย

Domains are now an even more vital, first point of contact for customers, partners, and collaborators as we move from a generic web to a personalized one. Domains often shapeย perceptionsย long before someone lands on the site itself, further highlighting their key role in displaying a brand’s niche, values, or personality. In fact, according to Identity Digitalโ€™s Hanover Survey Results, online users across all age groups who saw or heard aboutย creative domain extensions were more likely to find out more (61%) and to consider them for future purchases (57%).ย

Authenticity in an AI-saturated internetย

As AI continues to cement itself into the daily lives of individuals and businesses, the internet is flooding with AI-generated content, products, and personas. Todayโ€™s machine-generated internet is creating rising ambiguity, where consumers wonder whether content is from real businesses and real people.ย

Personalized domains must now playย a large roleย in business strategy. A domain is more than a technical asset; it stands as a declaration of identity and intent in today’s digital world. As AI blurs boundaries, domains function as stable roots of credibility.ย

Consider the rapid adoption of unique domain extensions over the past several years. Entrepreneurs choose domains that reflect not only what they offer, but also who they are. According to Identity Digitalโ€™s Hanover Survey Results, Gen Z leads in side-hustle domain purchases (55%), showing a strong appetite for personal brand and freelance projects. A unique domain extensionย like .studioย or .campย serves as a badge of credibility and a cornerstone of verified personhood, particularly as AI-generated contentย continues to skew authenticity.ย

Domains will become a new verification toolย

With more automated workflows, content pipelines, and interactions, it has become more difficult to spot the human element in online content. Echoing the above, consumers want to know when they are engaging with authentic brands, products, and services. Countless online users, for example, have been demanding that social postsย discloseย when the content they are seeing is AI-generated.ย

Like a verification tick, domains are uniquely positioned to meet this need since they are registered, traceable, and more likely tied to a valid email. This is why major digital platforms often direct users to official website links during moments of confusion or misinformation. This simple function has become increasingly essential, helping people distinguish genuine brands from AI-generated mimics or deep fakes. Identity Digitalโ€™s Hanover Survey Results found that perceptions surrounding domains have also shifted meaningfully, with confidence in their legitimacy increasing by 23% since 2022 and concerns about their memorability decreasing by 48%.ย

For creators and entrepreneurs, owning a unique domain extension is both a branding advantage and a structural safeguard. It reduces the risk of misrepresentation,ย establishesย trust with audiences, and provides a consistent home base across a sprawling digital ecosystem.ย

Domains anchor trust in today’s digital landscapeย

The next generation of the internet is not defined solely by AIย innovation, butย rather markedย by the interplay between automation and authenticity. As AI continues to accelerate creation, domains play a critical role in anchoring digital identity and verifying ownership. Where AI scales possibility, domains scale trust. For entrepreneurs navigating this transformation, a thoughtful domain strategyย isn’tย just about securingย anย address,ย it’sย about securing and safeguarding your brand online.ย

The businesses that thrive will be those that harness AI to build faster while branding their business better. Domains will become their signature, helping them stand out in a digital world full of noise.ย
