ByteDance Ltd. has backed OIN 2.0 by joining the Open Invention Network (OIN), bringing one of the globe’s top internet and social media platforms into history’s largest active patent cross-license. This step highlights ByteDance’s commitment to utilizing open source software (OSS) as foundational infrastructure across its international operations.
Open source software is the engine for almost every enterprise stack. Open Invention Network was created to safeguard open source from bad actors. Over the last two decades, open source has been able to flourish, driving innovation in the software market to levels previously imagined. OIN protects the foundational open source technologies powering Linux to Python, and everything in-between. That means it covers technologies that span cloud computing, networking, banking, communications and AI, among many others.
ByteDance runs a suite of platforms that includes TikTok, TikTok Shop, Lark, Douyin and Toutiao, among others. Those platforms depend on open source technologies to operate and scale across markets and hundreds of millions of users. By joining OIN 2.0, ByteDance aligns itself with a community built to reduce patent-related risk for the software that powers its infrastructure.
OIN was formed in 2005, to safeguard open source, and it has since assembled the largest patent non-aggression community, with membership that now exceeds 4,100 organizations. Together those members account for more than $10 trillion in annual revenues and own more than three million patents and applications.

Launched in 2026, OIN 2.0 marks the organization’s shift to a sustainable, shared funding structure, one designed to expand patent protection coverage as open source spreads into new technologies and industries. Rather than a static license, OIN 2.0 delivers continuously refreshed protection to its community, broadens the range of technologies it covers and reinforces the framework to meet demands of the years ahead.
That evolution matters because open source no longer sits at the edge of enterprise computing – it is the foundation. Cloud systems, artificial intelligence platforms and global consumer applications all run on shared code, and each new participant strengthens the collective defense against patent aggression.
