In 2026 alone, multi-agent deployments have grown by more than 300% in just a few months, signalling that agentic systems are moving rapidly from experimentation into real operational environments. AI agents are no longer peripheral tools, they are increasingly involved in building and managing core systems across organisations. However, what differentiates successful organisations is more about the level of discipline. Those that invest in evaluation, governance, and control mechanisms are able to move AI initiatives into production far more effectively than those that remain in perpetual pilot mode.
Why operational AI must be accountable, especially in regulated industries
This brings a second, equally critical dimension into focus – accountability. As AI becomes embedded in operational decision making, particularly in regulated industries such as financial services, telecommunications and retail, expectations around transparency and compliance are rising sharply. 2026 research notes that the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA) and Information Commissioners Office (ICO) have moved beyond aspirational guidance to a robust outcome based regulatory framework, where explainability, risk controls and governances are mandatory expectations for operational AI.
UK regulators have intensified their demands for explainability, bias controls, auditability and real time oversight. It’s no longer enough to offer high level assurances, organisations must be able to demonstrate how AI systems make decisions and how those decisions can be overridden when necessary.
Many organisations are now building in stronger human safeguards around their AI systems. In fact, 85% have human‑in‑the‑loop controls in place, 70% use kill switches so automated decisions can be stopped instantly when something doesn’t look right and 74% of firms are appointing C-suite leaders to oversee AI.
