U. S. Steel Powers Pennsylvania Economy with Jobs, Local Investment, and Community Impact

Supports Nearly 13,700 Jobs Across the Commonwealth

$5.6 Billion Annual Impact Fueling Pennsylvaniaโ€™s Economic Strength

$4 million invested in communities through giving, service, and partnerships

PITTSBURGH–(BUSINESS WIRE)–United States Steel Corporation (โ€œU. S. Steelโ€) today released the ๏ฌndings of its latest economic impact report for Pennsylvania, underscoring the companyโ€™s powerful and growing role in advancing the Commonwealthโ€™s economy, workforce, and communities. The analysis, conducted by Parker Strategy Group, shows that in Fiscal Year 2024, U. S. Steel generated $5.6 billion in total economic impact, supported 13,687 jobs statewide, and contributed $216 million in total tax revenues across the local and state level. This analysis re๏ฌ‚ects U. S. Steelโ€™s current Pennsylvania operations and excludes future capital investment associated with the Nippon Steel partnership, which is expected to modernize facilities, strengthen Pennsylvaniaโ€™s manufacturing base, and support additional jobs and economic activity.

For more than a century, U. S. Steel has been an essential part of Pennsylvaniaโ€™s identity and industrial strength. From its Pittsburgh headquarters to Mon Valley Works and beyond, U. S. Steel continues to power Pennsylvaniaโ€™s economy while investing in innovation, sustainability, and community partnerships that strengthen the region for generations to come.

โ€œPennsylvania is where U. S. Steel was built and where we continue to invest,โ€ said David B. Burritt, President and Chief Executive O๏ฌƒcer of U. S. Steel. โ€œWe are not just participating in Pennsylvaniaโ€™s economy; we are helping to power it. A $5.6 billion economic impact re๏ฌ‚ects the steady foundation of our operationsโ€”jobs, suppliers, and sustainable steelmaking that strengthens communities across the Commonwealthโ€”alongside continued investment for long-term competitiveness.โ€

Measured against Pennsylvaniaโ€™s broader economy, U. S. Steelโ€™s impact is signi๏ฌcant at multiple levels. The company supports 13,687 jobs statewide, comparable to the full civilian labor force of a smaller Pennsylvania county. Its $5.6 billion economic impact equals roughly 0.6% of Pennsylvania GDP (about $1 out of every $180 in the state economy), translating to approximately $15.3 million per day in economic activity. On a per-resident basis, that amounts to about $428 per Pennsylvanian. For scale, $5.6 billion is also roughly 11.8% of the Commonwealthโ€™s enacted 2024/25 General Fund appropriations. In Pittsburgh terms, $5.6 billion represents an annual level of economic activity comparable to major regional investments, and U. S. Steel delivers that impact year after year.

U. S. Steelโ€™s Pennsylvania operations re๏ฌ‚ect deep roots and a forward-looking strategy. Generations of workers have built careers through Mon Valley Works and other facilities, creating a proud tradition of skill and innovation that continues to evolve.

Pennsylvania President Pro Tempore Kim Ward said, โ€œU. S. Steel isnโ€™t just a companyโ€”itโ€™s part of our Western Pennsylvania identity. The partnership with Nippon Steel will not only transform the domestic steel industry as we know it, but more importantly will leave no Pennsylvania workers behind. These investments will protect and support nearly 13,700 jobs across the Commonwealth, including more than 3,400 ongoing steel industry jobs and create thousands of additional jobs tied to construction, suppliers, and local businesses. These e๏ฌ€orts will help guarantee a thriving and innovative domestic steel industry with high paying jobs while setting up the next several generations of Pennsylvania workers and strengthening our regionโ€™s economic outlook.โ€

“Even before the U. S. Steel โ€“ Nippon Steel partnership, every year they would come ask ‘What do you need?’ U. S. Steel o๏ฌ€ered to build a stainless-steel pavilion; they help schools in the area with reading programs in partnership with the Pittsburgh Penguins; and have helped support local veterans’ programs,” said Chris Kelly, Mayor of West Mi๏ฌ„in. โ€œYou don’t have to ask for help from U. S. Steel because that’s who they are. U. S. Steel is community.”

With its headquarters and historic operations in Pittsburgh, U. S. Steel continues to build on its legacy as a cornerstone of Pennsylvaniaโ€™s economyโ€”producing progress, creating opportunity, and powering the Commonwealthโ€™s future.

“U. S. Steel has played a critical role in shaping Pennsylvania’s rich manufacturing history for well over a century, and this new report underscores the signi๏ฌcant impact it continues to have on our economy,” said Department of Community and Economic Development Secretary Rick Siger. “Nippon Steel’s commitment to further invest at least $2.4 billion in the Mon Valley will ensure that more than 3,400 U. S. Steel employees continue to have access to quality, well-paying union jobs, while also creating thousands of new construction jobs. The Shapiro Administration is committed to advancing the Commonwealth’s steel industry and manufacturing sector, ensuring the economic foundations that have shaped our state for generations remain strong.”
