WINCHESTER, Va.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Reinforcing the company’s legacy and steadfast commitment to sustainability, Trex Company [NYSE:TREX], the world’s largest manufacturer of wood-alternative decking and residential railing, and leader in high-performance, low-maintenance outdoor living products, earned top honors in this year’s Environment + Energy (E+E) Leader Awards. Trex® composite decking was not only named Product of the Year but also the Judges’ Choice Winner as the top-scoring entry in the Consumer + Residential category.
“Trex continues to redefine the outdoor living industry with its relentless commitment to innovation, sustainability and performance,” noted one of the judges. “By pioneering composite decking made from up to 95% recycled materials, Trex has set the gold standard for environmentally responsible manufacturing while delivering durable, low-maintenance products that enhance outdoor spaces. With a track record of leadership in circular materials and green technology, Trex exemplifies how sustainability and ingenuity can transform an industry, ensuring beauty, strength and environmental stewardship for generations to come.”
The E+E Leader Awards is an annual program recognizing excellence in products and services that provide energy and environmental benefits, or in projects implemented by companies that improved environmental or energy management outcomes and increased the bottom line. Entries were evaluated and scored by a panel of independent judges from more than 20 companies, including Hyundai Motor Group, JLL, Air Force OEA, Navitas Partners, UCLA, TRC Companies, IWSI America, Intrinsic Textiles, Climate Social and CapGemini.
With the sustainability and energy landscape evolving rapidly, professionals face increasing challenges in selecting the right solutions. The E+E Leader Product & Project Awards serve as a trusted benchmark, highlighting cutting-edge innovations and proven success stories. Through rigorous expert evaluation, the program provides companies with vetted products and proven projects that drive meaningful improvements in sustainability and energy management.
“The winners of this year’s E+E Leader Awards are tackling some of the most pressing sustainability and energy challenges with real-world, scalable solutions,” said Sarah Roberts, Co-President of E+E Leader and C-Suite Compass LLC. “These projects and products push industry standards forward and are setting new benchmarks for innovation and impact.”
“Every year, our judges look to recognize the businesses that are truly moving the needle and striving for sustainability and operational efficiency,” added Kay Harrison, VP and head of the E+E Leader Awards program. “This year’s winners exemplify the kind of forward-thinking strategies and technologies that companies need to stay ahead in an increasingly complex energy and environmental landscape.”
Sustainability at Its Core
Trex composite decking was invented more than 30 years ago as a way to give new life and enhanced value to something otherwise considered as waste – discarded plastic bread bags. Today, the company continues to make its world-renowned decking using a proprietary mix of recycled polyethylene plastic film and reclaimed wood scrap, which accounts for up to 95% of the material in its decking products. Each year, Trex diverts hundreds of millions of pounds of polyethylene film, bags and wrap from landfills, making it one of the largest recyclers of plastic film packaging in North America. Since its inception, the company has upcycled in excess of five billion pounds of plastic waste.
“Trex demonstrates clear impact on diverting plastic waste from landfill and transitioning into a second life product,” noted another E+E judge in their evaluation.
Trex is also committed to improving energy efficiency, reducing waste and conserving water across its operations. For instance, the company uses vegetable oil instead of petroleum-based fluids in some hydraulic systems and prioritizes processing water reuse in closed loop systems, thereby lowering its consumption of water. Additionally, the company utilizes bi-coastal factories to reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions and works closely with suppliers to reduce environmental impact across the supply chain.
“Over the past three decades, Trex has dedicated itself to building a legacy of trust with our customers by delivering not only industry-leading products but also an unwavering commitment to sustainability,” stated Amy Fernandez, Chief Legal Officer and Head of Sustainability for Trex Company. “This recognition is particularly meaningful because it reinforces trust among consumers seeking sustainable solutions for their homes and helps to guide their decision making.”
In addition to the E+E Leader Award, Trex has earned several other environmental accolades this year. For the second consecutive year, the company was included on Barron’s list of the “100 Most Sustainable U.S. Companies.” Trex was also named the “Sustainable Brand Leader” for the decking category by the readers of Green Builder magazine, a title it has held for the past 15 years. Additionally, the brand’s newly updated Trex Select® decking was recognized by the editorial staff of Green Builder Media as one of the 50 most “Sustainable Products of the Year.”
“At Trex, sustainability is not just a buzzword – it’s a founding principle of our company and a core value that we live and breathe every day,” Fernandez added. “Even as our business expands, we remain focused on creating positive change in the world by innovating to reduce our environmental footprint.”
