The Ghost in the Machine: How AI Is Sidelining Local Businesses

By Eliot Steimle, General Manager

A Cautionary TaleĀ

A recent corporate event collapsed into chaos after an AI search recommendation suggested a non-local catering company that promised an authentic local experience. Reality is that it overpromised and failed to deliver. One vendor arrived late, another delivered the wrong menu, and what should have impressed guests instead damaged the hosting company’s reputation. Stories such as these highlight the issues on how AI recommended search results hurt local small businesses on a daily basis.Ā

Why AI Favors Scale Over Local FitĀ

This problem is not deliberate bias. It stems from how search algorithms are designed. Most systems value signals such as domain authority, number of reviews, and ad spend. National players have a huge advantage in these categories, leaving small, high-quality local businesses buried.Ā

A 2025 analysis by SE Ranking of AI Overviews found that large, authoritative domains were consistently favored over independent local providers. This creates blind spots where local expertise is sidelined in favor of companies that may not deliver on the ground.Ā

The Ripple Effect Across IndustriesĀ

The issue extends far beyond catering. Hotels, retail shops, realtors, bookstores, and service providers have all reported being overshadowed in AI-generated results. Independent booksellers, for example, often find themselves pushed beneath Amazon or large chains despite strong community followings. The pattern is consistent: algorithms favor reach and volume, not local relevance.Ā

How Searchers Can Break the PatternĀ

Decision-makers can shift outcomes by adjusting their queries. A broad search like ā€œbest event vendorsā€ or ā€œtop hotelsā€ almost always yields middleman platforms. But when context is includedĀ  ā€œSalt Lake City HVAC repair companies with fast responseā€ or ā€œUtah food truck catering experts with verified local experienceā€Ā  results are far more likely to surface qualified local providers.Ā

This shows that part of the solution lies in how prompts are framed. Adding location and context increases the chance that AI tools surface businesses that can actually deliver.Ā

Why Local Expertise MattersĀ

Local providers bring knowledge and accountability that algorithms cannot replicate. They understand regulatory requirements, cultural nuances, and seasonal patterns. They are invested in their community’s economy and reputation in ways national platforms are not.Ā

When technology overlooks these realities, it creates real risks: wasted budgets, missed expectations, and damaged reputations. AI can recommend, but it cannot guarantee reliability or community trust.Ā

Balancing Convenience With OversightĀ

AI promises convenience. The reality is risk when human oversight is absent. Decision-makers who rely solely on algorithmic suggestions often miss the most important factors: dependability, cultural fit, and accountability. These gaps matter more than glossy online profiles or large advertising budgets.Ā

A healthier balance is possible. AI can assist, but human judgment and local context must guide final decisions. Otherwise, communities risk losing not just individual contracts, but the vibrancy and resilience that come from thriving local businesses.Ā
