Sports provide us with endless joy and entertainment, but they also create a huge impact on our environment and the power grid. Sports teams are tackling the issue with the help of Bloom Energy. Its servers help to power sports venues for big-name teams, ranging from the New England Patriots to the Los Angeles Lakers.
SAP Center
The San Jose Sharks are doing great things on and off the ice with help from their partnership with Bloom Energy. The Sharks are welcoming the 2025 season with an incredible lineup of up-and-coming players like Will Smith and Macklin Celebrini. Plus, their arena is powered by Bloom Energy’s green power servers. The Sharks’ home, the SAP Center, was the first multi-purpose sports and entertainment facility to utilize fuel cell technology as a supplemental electricity source. The SAP Center is not only the home of the Sharks, but it’s also a popular concert and event venue. It hosts over 150 sports and entertainment events per year. High-powered events require reliable and strong energy. Bloom Servers are expected to help the SAP Center avoid 4.8 million pounds of carbon dioxide over the next 10 years.
Crypto.com Arena
The Crypto.com Arena (formerly the Staples Center) is home to the Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Kings, and the Los Angeles Sparks. In 2015, the arena installed 500 kW worth of Bloom Energy fuel cell servers to provide 25% of their power for events. Bloom’s servers generate electricity on-site for these sporting events plus all the music and entertainment events the arena hosts. Bloom has helped to reduce the LA area venue’s carbon footprint, decreasing their carbon dioxide production by 2,257,655 pounds over the lifetime of the servers.
The impact of switching to Bloom’s onsite power is similar to avoiding burning 797,922 pounds of coal and removing 213 cars from the road for one year. The Crypto.com Arena has also found other ways to increase their sustainability including having 1,727 solar panels installed on its rooftop, using LED lights, and minimizing their waste.
Gillette Stadium
Gillette Stadium is home to the New England Patriots, the New England Revolution, and a myriad of exciting concerts. Plus, they have a year-round office staff that works in the building. All of that activity requires a lot of power, which usually would be expensive and cause a huge impact on the environment and local community. The Patriots’ home stadium has partnered with Bloom Energy to reduce their energy consumption from the traditional grid.
Bloom Energy servers supply nearly 50% of the 65,878-seat stadium’s energy needs. This not only reduces emissions, but also saves money. “Good business and sustainability go hand in hand,” said Jim Nolan, COO of Gillette Stadium. “The addition of Bloom Energy Servers provides power that is not only clean, but also reliable and always-on for stadium-goers and the community.”
Honda Center
The Honda Center is home to the NHL’s Anaheim Ducks. It also host events ranging from UFC fights to Disney on Ice. The venue’s commitment to reducing its environmental impact is extensive including: environmentally friendly packaging for concessions, a recycling program, and Bloom Energy Servers to provide green energy for the center. Bloom’s servers provide over 50% of the power required by the sports and entertainment venue each year, specifically 80% of the venue’s base load power and 25% during a Ducks game or concert.
“It’s truly exciting to work on a project with benefits that extend beyond those directly involved, and that make significant contributions to our environmental efforts,” said Tom Ricks, chief investment officer for Anaheim Ducks owners Henry and Susan Samueli. “This new technology has incredible potential and we’re thrilled to have worked with city leadership, Bloom Energy, and Bank of America to be among the first large-scale arenas to implement the system.”
