Russell Nicolet didn’t set out to launch a massive lawn firm. He was simply interested in establishing a business that could help people as they struggled through life’s tough moments. But now, his firm, Nicolet Law, is a three-state operation with dozens of employees. But its focus remains the same: solid legal work and fighting for clients’ rights.
In fact, becoming a lawyer wasn’t even supposed to be in the cards for Nicolet. He wasn’t following any kind of family legacy or chasing status. He did want work that was meaningful. He was the first in his family to go to law school, so there was no manual to guide him. But a lack of a clear path ended up helping to shape his whole approach. “I didn’t know what to expect, and I didn’t really know how to make it all work,” he confesses.
His solution was to become “obsessed” with finding solutions for clients and constantly learning so he could get better.
The Hunt for Excellence
As a young attorney, Nicolet spent countless hours doing legal research to better himself. And instead of settling for just local knowledge, he sought out a broader and deeper understanding of the law. His early work involved different types of cases, but as he focused on injury law, he knew he had to look outside his own territory to sharpen his skills.
Thus, he started traveling often to Florida, Georgia, New York, and California to learn directly from some of the nation’s top trial lawyers. His work and dedication paid off in that it gave him the skills he needed for a wider view of the world. It also equipped him with advanced strategies that could benefit his clients.
His focus on doing excellent work eventually translated into a successful firm. Nicolet also gained recognition. But for him, the real measure of his success was in what the firm was achieving for its clients, such as securing major verdicts and settlements in the region, as well as getting good outcomes for his clients.
A Lawyer by Calling
Nicolet Law has grown significantly from its early days as a simple solo office. But its expansion across the Midwest isn’t just a business success story. For Nicolet, it’s also a way to reach more working families and individuals who are trying to recover from serious injuries.
“I am proud of the growth,” Nicolet explains, “but I am most proud of the excellent folks that work here [who] come in day after day to fight for the hard-working people and families.” He approaches the firm’s work as more than just a job. He considers it a calling to help, serve, and stand up for those who need it most.
Looking to the future, Russell Nicolet is focused on sticking with his mission. He wants the firm to keep growing so it can serve more people in areas that need good legal help, while also holding large corporations and insurance companies responsible. The main challenge, as he sees it, is expanding without losing the central identity of his firm, which is his sense of social responsibility and commitment to both advocacy and service to his clients.
