Responsible AI in Military Blueprint Moves Forward, But China Opts Out

In a major step for AI governance, around 60 countries, including the U.S., have endorsed a new “blueprint for action” that outlines the responsible use of artificial intelligence in military applications. The Responsible AI in the Military Domain (REAIM) summit, held in Seoul, brought global leaders together to discuss these crucial guidelines. However, China has opted not to support the non-binding document, highlighting growing tensions in the AI space. The issue is set to be raised in the UN General Assembly in October.

  • Around 60 countries, including the U.S., have endorsed a non-binding blueprint for the responsible military use of AI.
  • China, unlike last year, declined to support this new document.
  • The blueprint builds on the previous year’s “call to action” from the summit in Amsterdam.
  • AI in military contexts is set to be discussed further at the UN General Assembly in October.

The REAIM summit continues to shape how AI is integrated responsibly into defense systems worldwide, but differing views, especially from China, emphasize the challenges of achieving global consensus. Eyes are now on the upcoming UN meeting to see how these issues evolve on the world stage.

Audible Launches AI-Generated Audiobook Program Using Narrators’ Voices

Audible, Amazon’s audiobook platform, has launched a new program inviting professional narrators to train AI using their voices. This initiative aims to accelerate audiobook production while ensuring narrators still have creative control over the process. Select U.S.-based narrators will participate, with royalties earned on a per-title basis for audiobooks created using their AI-generated voices. The trial reflects a growing trend of AI integration in the audiobook industry.

  • Audible is inviting U.S.-based narrators to train AI models with their voices to create AI-generated audiobooks.
  • Narrators will have control over where their AI voice is used, with options to refine pacing and pronunciation.
  • Participants will be compensated through a royalty-sharing model, earning for each title using their AI voice.
  • Concerns linger about AI potentially replacing human narrators in the future, though Audible emphasizes narrator control.

Audible’s latest AI initiative offers narrators a way to monetize their voices while contributing to the growth of AI-generated audiobooks. As this technology evolves, the balance between human creativity and AI efficiency will continue to be a point of discussion in the audiobook industry.

AMD CEO Discusses AI Super Cycle and Product Pipeline

AMD’s CEO, Dr. Lisa Su, outlined the company’s vision for the future of AI chips, emphasizing the growth opportunities in what she calls an “AI super cycle.” At the Goldman Sachs Communacopia & Technology Conference, Su highlighted AMD’s commitment to staying competitive with a rapid product development roadmap, releasing new AI chips annually. AMD’s AI chip sales, driven by the successful MI300X GPU accelerator, are expected to surge, positioning the company to challenge Nvidia’s dominance in the market.

  • AMD is accelerating its AI product development, releasing new chips annually, including the upcoming MI325, MI350, and MI400 series.
  • The MI300X GPU accelerator has been the fastest-growing product in AMD’s history, with sales projected to hit $4.5 billion in 2024.
  • AMD aims to capture a significant share of the AI chip market, particularly for training large language models, competing directly with Nvidia.
  • AI chip sales contributed to AMD’s strong financial performance, with sales and earnings rising 9% and 19% year over year in Q2.

AMD’s aggressive push into the AI chip market signals its determination to seize a growing share of the sector. As the AI super cycle gains momentum, AMD’s product roadmap and rising sales will likely bolster its position as a key player in the rapidly expanding AI landscape.
