Service provider taps Red Hat’s cloud-native platform to significantly reduce application scaling times and enhance customer experiences while reducing operational complexity
BARCELONA, Spain – MWC BARCELONA–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Red Hat, the world’s leading provider of open source solutions, today announced that Telefónica Spain is standardizing on Red Hat OpenShift as the common platform for its IT workloads and cloud-native network functions (CNFs). As part of this standardization, Telefónica is also integrating Red Hat OpenStack Services on OpenShift to modernize its virtualized infrastructure on a unified foundation. This strategic shift allows Telefónica to streamline management across disparate environments, enabling both virtual machines (VMs) and cloud-native applications to run side by side while retaining the architectural agility to rapidly scale 5G and edge services.
Enhanced innovation and reliability for Telefónica customers
Red Hat OpenShift has become a key element in reducing the complexity of managing diverse network and IT operations and helps it respond to market demands faster. Red Hat OpenShift supports applications built for the latest network and IT technologies and uses cloud-native methodologies to achieve system- and network-wide automation. As part of Telefónica’s phased adoption strategy, all new workloads will be deployed on Red Hat OpenShift. In doing so, it gains greater flexibility, efficiency and resiliency while maintaining performance for compelling new applications and 5G services. With this hybrid architecture in place, Telefónica has the portability to scale workloads across any environment, including Azure, AWS and Google Cloud.
A very high percentage of services for Telefónica’s residential customer management processes are already in production on Red Hat OpenShift. Previously, scaling capacity required weeks; now it can be done in seconds. Overall, Telefónica has reduced application deployment times from a window of eight hours to as little as 90 minutes with Red Hat OpenShift, significantly reducing the scope for incidents and service degradation.
Managing one common platform helps lower costs and minimize the specialized training required for Telefónica staff. It also reduces silos and improves collaboration between teams to speed up problem solving and innovation. With Red Hat OpenShift, Telefónica centralizes updates, logging and security monitoring, while end users benefit from more reliable network performance and faster service releases.
