Pure-play lidar company, Velodyne Lidar, today announced in a company press release the agenda for its third annual World Safety Summit (WSS) on Autonomous Technology. The WSS will be addressing issues that include vehicle autonomy and advanced driver assistance systems on roadways and in communities.

The pure-play lidar company wrote that the summit aims to foster a greater understanding of how autonomous technologies and automated safety systems can improve vehicle navigation and build smarter transportation infrastructure.

By networking and sharing various points of view at WSS, Velodyne comments that it seeks to accelerate safety solutions for pedestrians, bicyclists, motorcyclists, and truck and vehicle occupants.

Sally Frykman, Vice President of Communications at Velodyne Lidar commented on the crowd its annual WSS attracts by saying: “Public education is essential to advancing the potential of autonomous technology, as it is applied to AVs and powerful driver safety features, for revolutionizing transportation. The summit attracts a diverse group of experts with each session providing a unique window into pivotal issues related to future safe autonomy. It is gratifying to see so many government and industry influencers and their organizations recognizing the value of our company’s efforts to build public awareness and understanding of new technical solutions.”

Autonomous vehicles have been rising in popularity due to the capabilities it brings to driving which is having the knock-on effect on the number of automotive manufacturers adding autonomous technologies to their vehicles, and not just cars.

Data-driven and AI-powered companies such as freight dispatcher, SmartHop, who have raised $4.5m in funding for its dispatch solution platform, are amassing data that could potentially be used for when trucks, lorries, vans, and a range of other commercial vehicle manufacturers who decide to switch to autonomous driving or are using aspects of autonomous data.

The pure-play lidar companies WSS keynote speakers are said to include recognised names in the automated and fully autonomous safety arena which include Mark Rosekind, Ph.D., Chief Safety Innovation Officer at Zoox, Oliver Cameron, Co-Founder & CEO of Voyage, and Nicole Nason, Administrator for the Federal Highway Administration.

The pure-play lidar company has written in the press release that the summit agenda will feature five-panel sessions with representatives from globally recognised brands that include Audi of America, Aurora, AutonomouStuff, J.D. Power, MIT AgeLab, PAVE, Princeton University, U.S. Senate, Velodyne, and Zoox.

Attendees can expect to watch sessions that explore topics such as examining advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) capabilities, media perspectives on the mobility landscape, examining the regulatory roadmap for autonomous vehicles and ADAS, how industry collaboration can potentially advance safe autonomy on public roadways, and connecting cars with smart city infrastructure.

The pure-play lidar companies WSS comes at a time where car manufacturers are paying close attention to autonomous technologies with a number of companies attempting to create its own technology. An example is Mitsubishi Electric developing what it believes to be the world’s first scene-aware interaction technology that is capable of highly natural and intuitive interaction with humans.

Velodyne Lidar explained that for this year’s summit, it will be teaming up with the Western Automotive Journalists’ Silicon Valley Reinvents the Wheel, an annual automotive technology conference.

Brian Douglas, President, Western Automotive Journalists commented on what attendees can expect from the WSS by saying: “The World Safety Summit provides an ideal forum to increase awareness and understanding among key stakeholders on the transformative gains that can be achieved with autonomous technologies. It brings together some of the industry’s leading authorities to discuss the critical issues related to improving mobility and safety in transportation.”

The pure-play lidar companies’ third annual 2020 WSS is an open invitation to the public, takes place on October 22 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. PDT, and is being held as a virtual event.
