Integrating Century Health’s novel large language model (LLM) with electronic health records (EHRs) rapidly delivered 130k+ clinical variables to advance research into MS treatment and care
SALT LAKE CITY and NEW YORK, Sept. 24, 2025 /PRNewswire/ —Ā Nira MedicalĀ and the Rocky Mountain Multiple Sclerosis Clinic (RMMSC) today announced the presentation of a joint research poster at the 2025 European Committee for Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis (ECTRIMS) Congress (September 24-26), unveiling a groundbreaking artificial intelligence (AI) approach to building a real-world MS disease registry to advance treatments and access to effective MS care.
The poster [#P365 430-630], titled “A Novel Large Language Model Approach for Building a Real-World Multiple Sclerosis Disease Registry,” demonstrates how advanced AI can transform fragmented electronic health record (EHR) data into a comprehensive, scalable registry to accelerate MS research and care. The presentation will take place in the Exhibit hall today, September 24 between 16:30 and 18:30 CEST.
There’s a growing need for real-world data (RWD) in MS research and drug development to shine a light on how current therapies perform across populations, especially long-term effectiveness, safety, and treatment patterns. This data is crucial in advancing patient care and outcomes. Today, most MS registries are built through slow, expensive manual chart reviews, limiting sample sizes, diversity, and real-world applicability. Now, AI has the potential to unlock the full potential of these insights by structuring and abstracting data at scale.
In collaboration with Century Health, this research applies the Century Health Abstraction and Retrieval Model (CHARM), a large language model (LLM) fine-tuned for MS-specific clinical data, to a cohort of more than 4,200 RMMSC patients. CHARM enabled highly accurate abstraction of critical clinical variables from unstructured EHR data, including EDSS scores, disease-modifying therapy timelines, MRI findings, and relapse events.
“We believe being able to unlock EHR data is a turning point in how we approach real-world evidence in neurology,” said Dr. John Foley, Neurologist and Founder of Rocky Mountain Multiple Sclerosis Clinic, a Nira Medical practice. “By structuring raw data at scale, we’re laying the groundwork for a more complete and representative understanding of MS. This is critical for advancing therapies, supporting clinical decision-making, and improving outcomes across diverse patient populations.”
“Our goal was to harness the power of AI to overcome long-standing barriers in real-world MS research,” said Rebekah Foster, Head of Data at Nira Medical. “This approach gives us access to deeply meaningful clinical dataāsuch as EDSS, relapses, and treatment outcomesāat an unprecedented scale and level of accuracy.”
Key Findings:
- EDSS successfully abstracted in over 97% of visits using CHARM
- 4,241-patient cohort with rich longitudinal data
- 79.5% of patients experienced at least one relapse; 84% received B-cell therapy
- High-fidelity insights into MS subtype, treatment history, and imaging patterns
“This work demonstrates the power of applying advanced AI in close collaboration with leading clinicians and researchers. By transforming unstructured data into meaningful insights, we’re building a shared foundation that accelerates research and discovery,” said Vish Srivastava, Co-Founder & CEO of Century Health.
This AI-powered method reduces months of manual data work to a fraction of the time, enabling larger, more representative MS registries that can accelerate drug development, improve clinical trial design, and inform better patient care.
