STIRLING’s VAULT100™ upright freezer receives ACT U.S. Environmental Impact Factor (EIF) score of 23—the lowest validated score of any ultra-low temperature (ULT) model listed in the ACT database as of today.
ATHENS, Ohio, March 28, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Stirling Ultracold, innovative developer and manufacturer of ULT freezers, today announced completion of its ACT Ecolabel audit by My Green Lab and inclusion of the company’s new VAULT100 upright ULT freezer in the ACT database, with total EIF scores of 23, 35.3 and 35.4 for the US, EU and UK respectively. This represents a notable improvement in third-party validated EIF from Stirling’s previous upright model and demonstrates the company’s commitment to quantifiable environmental performance improvements in the lab equipment and ULT markets.
“It’s very gratifying to see our latest effort to reduce ULT environmental impacts being validated by a respected lab sustainability advocate like My Green Lab,” noted Stirling Ultracold CEO, Clayton Newman. “The VAULT100 builds on our sustainability legacy and 360-degree approach, which the ACT Ecolabel EIF recognizes through an industry-standard scoring process.”
Recently replacing the company’s SU780XLE upright model with the same storage capacity and matching external dimensions, the VAULT100 is the first freezer in the industry with a -100°C to -20°C temperature range and features temperature uniformity of +/-3°C at -80°C throughout the interior cabinet. The wider temperature range gives customers more storage choices without compromising energy efficiency and is ideal for labs that frequently access samples from the freezer. Operating at the -100°C setpoint, the VAULT100 interior cabinet remains below -70°C when the door is open for up to 2 minutes.
Stirling Ultracold revolutionized the ultra-low freezer market in 2011 with the commercial introduction of the company’s free-piston Stirling engine cooling technology, a more energy-efficient alternative to traditional compressor-based systems. The VAULT100 is powered by the new M6D Stirling engine that builds on those original advantages with a more robust design and new linear motor that allows lower power consumption at the control board. The M6D engine improves system reliability and energy efficiency over previous Stirling designs, allowing the VAULT100 to use only 5.8 kWh/day (steady-state) with a Maximum Daily Energy Consumption (MDEC) of 0.22 kWh/day/cu-ft, validated by ENERGY STAR®-certification.
About the My Green Lab ACT Ecolabel
The My Green Lab ACT Ecolabel is the world’s premier ecolabel for laboratory products. The program ensures Accountability, Consistency, and Transparency in the reporting of environmental impact data to enable sustainable laboratory procurement. It was designed by scientists and procurement specialists to provide clear, third-party verified information about the sustainability profile of laboratory products. By providing needed transparency around manufacturing, product content, energy and water use, packaging, and end-of-life impacts, ACT makes it easier to choose environmentally preferable products and to reduce the carbon impact of laboratory supply chains.
