National Newspaper Week 2025: ‘Protect the Truth’

Print and digital advertising campaign in newspapers across Canada focuses on fact-checking

TORONTO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Sunday marked the start of the 85th National Newspaper Week, an annual opportunity to recognize the role that newspapers play in an active and healthy democracy.

This year, News Media Canada reminds Canadians that they can ‘Protect the Truth’ by getting their news from credible news sources that fact-check information.


“In a world of misinformation and disinformation, amplified by algorithms that prioritize engagement, we need fact-based, fact-checked journalism. Crowdsourcing is not journalism. There are no alternative facts: there are just facts,” said Paul Deegan, President and CEO of News Media Canada. “And Canadians need facts to live their lives and to make informed decisions that empower them to participate effectively in democratic processes.”

Canadian newspapers are powered by humans, for humans. Journalists check the facts so that readers can trust the original news content, which, in many cases, cannot be found anywhere else. Hundreds of newspapers deliver vital information to Canadians every day, connecting and empowering local communities across the country. In fact, four in five adults in Canada (86%) read newspapers each week in either traditional or online formats. And two-thirds of Canadians trust the content in news media, ahead of television, radio, magazines, online search and social media.

National Newspaper Week runs until Saturday, October 11, 2025, and is celebrated across North America. The 2025 Canadian program, ‘Protect the Truth’, includes a national print and digital advertising campaign in newspapers across the country, focusing on the importance of fact-checking.
