Tacoma-based home services provider urges homeowners to stay diligent about searching for leaks to avoid costly repairs
TACOMA, Wash., March 14, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Harts Plumbers, Electricians &Ā HVAC Technicians, a top-rated home services provider founded in 2013, will honor the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) annual Fix-a-Leak Week March 17-23 by offering homeowners tips on recognizing and repairing leaks before they become very costly.
“Household leaks cost homeowners nearly 1 trillion gallons of water a year nationwide,” said Richard Hart, co-owner of Harts Plumbers, Electricians & HVAC Technicians. “That is why it’s critical that homeowners learn how to recognize the signs of a hidden leak and understand why it’s important to stop the leak as quickly as possible.”
The EPA estimates that 10% of homes have leaks that waste 90 gallons of water or more per day. This can add hundreds of dollars to a homeowner’s utility bill throughout the year.
The experts at Harts Plumbers, Electricians & HVAC Technicians recommend that homeowners stay diligent about leaks in their homes and offer the following suggestions:
- Inspect the home for leaks: Homeowners should look for standing water on floors and wet spots on walls or ceilings. This could indicate a leak in an internal pipe or a leaky roof.
- Check the toilet for leaks: Put a few drops of food coloring in the tank and wait for 15 minutes to see if the colored water leaks into the bowl. If it does, the flapper is bad or deteriorated and should be replaced.
- Check the water meter: Check the display on the water meter, write down the number and wait two hours. If the meter has moved when no water was used, there may be a leak somewhere in the home.
- Check the water bill: If a family of four exceeds 12,000 gallons a month, there are probably serious leaks somewhere in the home.
- Inspect the roof: Note any loose or missing shingles and replace them to stop leaks from forming. Have a professional inspect the roof annually once it is more than 10 years old to ensure there are no hidden leaks. Roof leaks can cause water damage to the home’s wooden frame or leak into the home, causing damage inside.
“Leaks are one of the most common sources of water damage in a home,” Hart said. “That’s why Fix-a-Leak Week is so important. It reminds us to stay vigilant about checking our homes for leaks and water damage so that we can avoid costly repair bills.”
