Florida Nonprofit Economic Impact Report Highlights Significant Contributions as Demand for Services Continues to Rise

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–The Florida Nonprofit Alliance (FNA) released its triennial report on the economic impact of nonprofits in Florida. As was the case in the 2023 report, the nonprofit sector is a powerful economic engine, generating over $140 billion in revenue1. However, the need for nonprofit services continues to grow. In 2025, 31% of organizations reported an increased demand for their services, and almost 49% of Florida nonprofits saw an increase in the number of clients served from 2024.2

“Florida’s nonprofit sector continues to make a significant economic impact across our state through contributions to employment, wages, and revenue,” said Sabeen Perwaiz, President & CEO of the Florida Nonprofit Alliance. “At the same time, Florida continues to experience higher levels of economic hardship than most other states, creating a significant and ongoing need for nonprofit intervention.”

“The Jessie Ball DuPont Fund is proud to support this important research that highlights the significant economic and social impact of the nonprofit sector,” said Mari Kuraishi, president of the Jessie Ball duPont Fund. “Nonprofits are critical partners in meeting community needs, finding creative solutions to society’s greatest challenges, and to growing a future that is more prosperous for all Floridians. This research amplifies the reality that supporting nonprofits is critical to reaching Florida’s economic and community potential.”

Communities with high rates of poverty often rely on the support of nonprofits who can offer vital services, particularly to households that fall below the federal poverty threshold or are classified as asset limited, income constrained, employed (ALICE). According to the latest income study conducted by United for ALICE, 42% of households in the U.S. currently find themselves below either the ALICE threshold or the federal poverty line.

According to FNA’s report, Florida continues to experience higher levels of economic hardship than most other states, creating a significant and ongoing need for nonprofit intervention.

  • Among the 50 states and the District of Columbia, Florida ranks 48th nationally in the percentage of households falling below the ALICE threshold (47%).
  • The state’s nonprofit density remains low relative to the high level of statewide need. Florida ranks 43rd in the number of nonprofits per 1,000 households (2.6), well below D.C. (13.7), Delaware (8.4), and Vermont (7.2).

“This increase in hardship only magnifies the value nonprofits create,” said Perwaiz. “Florida nonprofit organizations are key components of the state and local economy as employers and service providers. We must ensure continued support of the sector to meet the pressing needs of communities across Florida.”

The report also identifies direct and indirect economic impact of the state’s nonprofit sector. Some highlights include:

Assets

  • Florida nonprofits hold $312.4 billion in total assets to support their missions and sustain vital community services.
  • This number represents a 7% increase since the previous study year (2023).

Income

  • Florida nonprofits reported $182.3 billion in income during the assessed period, with an average income of $7.9 million per nonprofit organization.
  • This figure represents a 1% increase in total income from the previous study year.

  • This represents an 8% increase from the previous study year (2023).

  • Compared to the 27 sectors reporting wage and employment data to the Florida Department of Commerce, nonprofits’ average annual wages are higher than 10 sectors, including educational services, retail, and leisure and hospitality.
