Future of AIAI

First-Ever Ethical Code for AI Use in Education released

New York, August 27, 2025 – Litero AI,  аn аcademic integrity tool,  has announced the world’s first universal Ethical Codeх for the use of artificial intelligence in higher education. The Codex reflects insights from leading institutions including Stanford, Harvard, Carnegie Mellon, and Oxford, and has been designed to be adaptable across disciplines and regions.

The Codex arrives at a critical moment – AI becomes ubiquitous among students, raising urgent questions about fairness, academic integrity, and responsible adoption. At the same time, universities currently lack a unified policy or clear rules on the use of artificial intelligence. The Codex is the comprehensive set of principles and practices guiding responsible collaboration with AI in academic work. It is now openly available for institutions, faculty, and students seeking to build transparent, future-proof approaches to learning.

Many researches show that most students already use AI in their studies, but universities remain divided – some banning, others encouraging, and many lacking clear policies altogether. This gap has fueled confusion, false accusations, and legal risks.

According to The Guardian, 92% of students already use generative AI tools, up from 66% just a year earlier. Despite this surge, only one-third of students receive formal AI training from their universities. Instead of offering guidance, many institutions have resorted to penalties. In one highly publicized case, Haishan Yang was expelled from the University of Minnesota for alleged AI use, resulting in the loss of his visa and a federal lawsuit. U.S. universities are now spending over $196 million annually on AI enforcement measures – including monitoring, investigations, disciplinary actions, and policy development –  underscoring the scale of the problem.

Against this backdrop, Litero’s AI in the Ethical Codex provides universities with a constructive alternative: a framework that emphasizes transparency, fairness, and academic freedom. The codex outlines principles for integrating AI into learning, including clear disclosure policies for students, best practices for professors, protections against discriminatory enforcement, and recommendations for training and support.

“Right now we see mass adoption of AI among students, while universities remain conservative and resistant to these technologies,” said Alexey Pokatilo, CEO of Litero AI. “In my view, we live in the age of AI, and there’s no point in ignoring it. We believe the path forward lies in thoughtful integration of AI rather than prohibition.”

The launch of the AI in Ethical Codex marks the first step toward building a global standard for responsible AI integration in academia. Litero AI plans to collaborate with universities, policymakers, and student organizations worldwide to refine and expand the framework in the coming months.
