Recognition underscores CPower’s leadership in enabling energy flexibility through demand response, with company announcing 40% growth in dispatches as AI-driven energy needs accelerate
BALTIMORE, Sept. 18, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — CPower Energy (“CPower”), a leading Virtual Power Plant (VPP) platform, today announced that it has been named a VPP market leader by Wood Mackenzie for the third year running. As with past reports, the Wood Mackenzie 2025 North America virtual power plant report ranked CPower for its dispatchable load under management and number of market and utility demand response programs, among other criteria.
The report is published as grid operators and utilities nationwide struggle with unprecedented demand growth from artificial intelligence computing, data centers and the electrification of transportation, housing and other sectors of the economy.
According to Wood Mackenzie, company deployments, unique offtakers and utility and market programs monetized grew over 33% in North America year-over-year. A frigid winter and relentless summer heat waves have driven up demand peaks this year, underscoring the value of VPPs in enhancing grid reliability and flexibility.
Year-to-date, CPower has dispatched customers across more than 900 events, 40% more this year than last. The resulting relief provided by big-box retailers, data centers, manufacturers, hospitals, schools and other large load customers has helped keep the lights on and the economy going in communities nationwide.
“We are honored that Wood Mackenzie has again validated CPower’s leadership in Virtual Power Plants. Fast, reliable demand response has never been more critical because it empowers energy users to be part of the solution,” said Michael D. Smith, CEO, CPower. “Without tapping into existing customer-sited assets, the U.S. risks missing out on billions of dollars in market growth from AI alone over the next five years due to a lack of energy.”
Wood Mackenzie’s VPP report found that while data centers drive demand growth, CPower counterbalances their impact. With nearly 23,000 sites nationwide, CPower leverages the flexible energy of customers across all major industries, including data centers, hyper scalers and bitcoin miners, making them grid assets.
“CPower’s leadership in the VPP space is rooted in its approach to customer performance across every different industry,” said Ben Hertz-Shargel, Global Head of Grid Edge, Wood Mackenzie. “There’s finally widespread recognition that VPPs can put money back in the pockets of businesses, rather than just raising rates on them through infrastructure development.”
