Apple Delays AI Feature Rollout in First iOS 18 Update

Apple Inc.’s anticipated AI features will arrive later than initially planned. While iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 are set for a September release, the new Apple Intelligence capabilities will be delayed until October.

  • This extension gives Apple more time to resolve bugs and refine the features. Developers will get early access through iOS 18.1 and iPadOS 18.1 betas starting this week. This is an unusual move for the company that typically waits until the initial release is public before previewing follow-up updates.
  • The decision to separate the AI features from the initial software launch aims to ensure a smoother consumer rollout. Apple Intelligence will not be available on the iPhone 16 models at their launch but will be included in subsequent updates. The full suite of features, including enhanced Siri capabilities and integration with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, will be introduced gradually throughout 2024 and into 2025.
  • In addition to iPhone and iPad, Apple Intelligence will extend to macOS Sequoia and later to the Vision Pro. This strategy highlights Apple’s commitment to advancing in the generative AI space, which has seen rapid development and adoption over the past year. The delay also aligns with Apple’s broader strategy to bolster new device sales with significant software enhancements.

This approach reflects Apple’s cautious but strategic rollout, ensuring that their AI features are thoroughly tested and polished before a wide release. With the iPhone 16 focusing on incremental design changes, the upcoming software enhancements will play a crucial role in driving consumer interest and sales.

Apple Joins White House’s Commitment to Safe AI Development

Apple has joined the Biden administration’s voluntary commitments to the safe development of artificial intelligence (AI), becoming the latest of 16 companies to do so since last year.

On July 26, the White House announced, “Apple’s commitment reinforces these guidelines as foundational for responsible AI innovation.”

First introduced in July 2023, these commitments promote safe, secure, and transparent AI development. Initial signatories included Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft, and others.

The commitments address emerging technologies’ risks and ethical considerations, focusing on transparency and preventing misuse. The Biden-Harris Administration urges the industry to maintain high standards, ensuring innovation respects Americans’ rights and safety.

In September, eight more companies, including Adobe and IBM, joined these commitments. However, critics like the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) argue that voluntary commitments are insufficient and call for enforceable regulations to ensure fair, transparent, and privacy-respecting AI practices.

ChatGPT’s Advanced Voice Mode Set to Launch for Plus Users Next Week

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has confirmed that ChatGPT’s AdvancedVoice Modewill be available to Plus users next week.

In a post on X, Altman announced that the eagerly awaited GPT-4o-powered Voice Mode will enter its alpha phase for paid subscribers next week. This new model aims to address the delays experienced with the current Voice Mode, which has an average latency of 2.8 seconds for GPT-3.5 and 5.4 seconds for GPT-4. The GPT-4o is expected to eliminate noticeable delays.

The new model, unveiled earlier this year, demonstrated the large language model’s multi-modal and real-time conversational abilities. OpenAI stated that the functionality would only be made available once it had passed rigorous internal safety and reliability checks.
