AI implementation in specialized fields requires managing the many variables necessary to create an effective LLM prompt and exponentially multiplying this complexity by integrating the ever-changing user variables specific to a given domain and unique to each user.

Education, in general, and language learning, in particular, are uniquely well-suited to benefit from the power of these new technologies. As the CEO of Memrise, I’ve observed how the seemingly straightforward act of prompting AI systems has effectively become a specialized discipline requiring significant expertise. Providing detailed guidance on how AI should approach the task with examples where necessary.

Output Parameters

The required level of detail and structure (e.g., text, CSV, JSON, etc.)

All these variables and more help LLMs deliver a good response for a particular query type from a specific type of user. However, no two users are the same, particularly in the realm of language learning.The interplay of variables such as query type, user intent, and context allows Large Language Models (LLMs) to generate relevant and informative responses. These models are trained on vast amounts of data, enabling them to understand and process natural language in a sophisticated manner. However, it is crucial to acknowledge that the effectiveness of LLMs can be influenced by the individual user and their unique needs, especially within the context of language learning.

Each language learner has a distinct learning style, proficiency level, and set of goals. Some learners may prefer a more immersive approach, while others may benefit from explicit grammar instruction. Additionally, learners may have varying levels of motivation, self-discipline, and time commitment. However, expertise alone is insufficient. Technical teams without language education experience create technically impressive solutions that fail to support actual learning. Educators without AI expertise develop theoretically sound approaches that don’t translate to effective prompts.
