
The UK has ambitious plans to become a global leader in artificial intelligence.
Government investment in AI infrastructure is accelerating through initiatives such as AI Growth Zones, Sovereign AI investment programmes and advanced computing capabilities. Industry leaders continue to highlight the importance of AI skills, while employers increasingly discuss the need for an AI-ready workforce.
Yet there is a fundamental question that receives far less attention than infrastructure, investment or regulation: who will build, manage, govern and improve these systems in the years ahead?
The conversation about AI readiness often begins at the point of employment. By then, however, many of the factors that shape participation in AI have already been determined. Confidence, exposure, aspiration and access are formed much earlier, often during secondary education.
If the UK is serious about becoming an AI maker rather than simply an AI user, it must address a growing gap between AI ambition and AI preparedness among young people.
Young People Are Already Using AI
One of the most persistent misconceptions in discussions about AI education is that young people are waiting to be introduced to AI.
In reality, many are already using it every day.
Research conducted by Teens in AI in May 2026 found that nearly 70% of young people surveyed use AI tools daily. Most reported feeling confident using AI systems, and 94% said they could imagine themselves working in a future role involving AI.
The challenge is therefore not whether young people are interested in AI. The challenge is whether the systems around them are helping them engage with it effectively, responsibly and purposefully.
The findings suggest that interest is already widespread. What is missing is a clear and consistent pathway that helps young people develop deeper understanding, critical thinking, ethical implications and practical skills.
The Readiness Gap
Despite widespread AI use among young people, almost half of those surveyed said their school was not preparing them for a future shaped by AI.
This gap matters because AI readiness is about more than technical capability.
Young people need to understand how AI systems work, where they are used, what their limitations are, and how ethical considerations such as bias, transparency and accountability apply in practice.
They also need to understand how AI connects to future careers.
Without that understanding, there is a risk that young people become passive users of AI technologies rather than active contributors to their development and governance.
The concern is particularly important given the pace of change expected in the labour market. The World Economic Forum projects that 39% of workers’ core skills will change by 2030, with AI acting as one of the key drivers of transformation.
Preparing for that future cannot begin when someone enters the workforce. It must begin much earlier.
Infrastructure Alone Will Not Solve the Skills Challenge
The UK is making significant investments in AI capability.
New AI Growth Zones are being established across Great Britain. Public and private investment is being directed towards computing infrastructure, AI companies and regional economic growth. Major employers continue to expand their AI capabilities and seek new talent.
These developments are welcome and necessary.
However, infrastructure investment does not automatically create a talent pipeline.
The history of technological transformation shows that economic opportunity is not distributed evenly unless deliberate action is taken. New industries often emerge faster than education systems can adapt, leaving skills shortages and participation gaps in their wake.
AI presents a similar challenge.
The communities expected to benefit from AI-led growth will only realise that opportunity if local young people are equipped with the knowledge, confidence and pathways needed to participate.
Otherwise, there is a risk that AI infrastructure is built in regions where many young people remain disconnected from the opportunities it creates.
Why Schools Cannot Solve This Alone
Schools play a critical role in preparing young people for the future, but expecting them to address AI readiness independently is unrealistic.
Teachers are already navigating significant curriculum demands while adapting to rapid technological change.
Recent education research indicates that many teachers are experimenting with generative AI tools, but levels of training, confidence and institutional support remain uneven.
This creates a difficult environment for schools.
Many educators recognise the importance of AI literacy but are still determining how best to introduce these concepts safely, responsibly and effectively.
The result is inconsistency.
Some young people benefit from innovative programmes, engaged teachers and strong industry connections. Others have little exposure beyond their personal use of AI tools.
A national challenge requires a broader response than individual schools can provide on their own.
What Young People Are Asking For
When young people are asked what would help them feel more prepared for an AI-driven future, their answers are remarkably consistent.
They are not primarily asking for more theory.
The strongest demand is for practical experience. More than half of respondents in the Teens in AI survey said hands-on projects would help them most.
Young people also want greater understanding of how AI is used in real-world settings. They want access to tools, opportunities to solve meaningful problems and visibility of career pathways.
This reflects a wider lesson that has emerged across technology education.
Learning is often most effective when it is connected to practical application. Project-based experiences help transform abstract concepts into understanding, confidence and aspiration.
AI education is no different.
The Role of Industry
Industry has an important role to play in closing the AI readiness gap.
Too often, employer engagement begins at recruitment. By that stage, many inequalities in confidence, access and awareness have already become established.
Organisations seeking future AI talent should consider how they can engage much earlier.
Mentoring, challenge-based learning, hackathons, work placements, career insight sessions and project collaboration can all help young people understand how AI is applied in real-world environments.
This is not simply a social responsibility initiative.
It is a long-term talent strategy.
Organisations that help develop future talent pipelines today are contributing to the workforce they will depend on tomorrow.
The most effective partnerships recognise that preparing young people for an AI future requires sustained engagement rather than isolated interventions.
Building Responsible AI Readiness
Discussions about AI skills sometimes focus narrowly on technical capability.
However, responsible AI readiness requires a broader perspective.
Young people need foundational AI literacy, but they also need critical thinking skills. They must understand how to evaluate outputs, identify limitations, recognise potential bias and question the systems they encounter.
Ethics cannot be treated as an optional extra.
As AI becomes more embedded in daily life, the ability to engage critically with technology becomes increasingly important.
Preparing young people for an AI future therefore means preparing them to use AI confidently while also understanding its implications.
The goal is not simply to create future AI engineers.
It is to create informed citizens, workers, entrepreneurs and leaders who can participate thoughtfully in an AI-enabled society.
A Shared Responsibility
AI readiness should be viewed as shared infrastructure.
Just as physical infrastructure requires coordination between government, industry and communities, AI readiness requires coordinated action across education, employers and policymakers.
Schools build foundational understanding.
Industry provides relevance, pathways and real-world context.
Government creates the conditions for scale, consistency and equitable access.
When these actors work in isolation, gaps emerge. When they work together, young people gain clearer routes into opportunity.
The challenge facing the UK is not a lack of ambition. The challenge is ensuring that ambition is matched by preparation.
The Question We Need to Ask
The UK has made significant commitments to AI innovation and growth.
The question is no longer whether AI will shape the future workforce. It already is.
The more important question is whether we are preparing young people early enough to participate in that future.
The evidence increasingly suggests that many young people are ready to engage with AI. They are already using it, exploring it and imagining careers connected to it.
What they need now is a clearer pathway.
The UK’s AI talent challenge does not begin at recruitment. It begins much earlier, in classrooms, communities and the experiences that shape whether young people see themselves as capable of helping to build the future.
If we want a generation that can not only use AI but also question it, improve it and lead its development responsibly, readiness must start long before the first job application.
