The crypto industry has spent the past decade trying to remove intermediaries from finance. It is now moving toward something even more radical: removing humans from parts of the decision loop altogether.
AI agents are no longer limited to summarising research, answering support tickets, or routing workflow tasks. They are increasingly being designed to hold crypto wallets, execute payments, trade assets, interact with protocols, and commission other services autonomously. In other words, they are evolving from tools into economic actors. That shift may prove commercially transformative. It may also become the industry’s next major governance failure if accountability does not catch up just as quickly.
That is the core issue the market is still underestimating. The debate is often framed as a technical one: can agents become more capable, more autonomous, and more efficient in navigating on-chain environments? The more urgent question is institutional. When an AI agent causes financial harm, who exactly is responsible? Recent industry discussion has made clear that even serious insiders do not yet have a settled answer .
This ambiguity would be less alarming if autonomous agents were still speculative. They are not. Market forecasts have suggested that more than one million AI agents could be created in a single year, while crypto-AI infrastructure is being marketed as one of the sector’s next major growth categories . The direction of travel is obvious. Autonomous software is being given the ability not only to analyse markets, but to move money.
That changes the risk profile of crypto in at least three important ways.
First, speed becomes a governance problem. What makes AI agents economically attractive is the same quality that makes them dangerous in adversarial conditions: they can act at machine speed. A compromised wallet manager, an exploited instruction set, or a poorly bounded trading agent can fragment value across addresses, bridges, and liquidity venues before a human operator even understands what is happening. In conventional financial systems, the time between anomaly and intervention is already narrow. In fully autonomous, on-chain systems, that window may shrink to seconds.
Second, delegation obscures accountability. When harm occurs in traditional finance, responsibility usually traces back to an identifiable set of human or corporate actors. The chain may be imperfect, but it exists. With AI agents, that chain becomes blurred across model providers, application developers, wallet infrastructure, protocol operators, deployers, and economic beneficiaries. Each participant can plausibly argue that the decisive action occurred elsewhere. This is precisely how systemic irresponsibility develops: everyone is adjacent to the risk, but no one accepts primary ownership of it.
Third, the industry is mistaking programmability for governance. Smart contracts can automate execution. They cannot independently solve questions of duty of care, legal liability, or cross-border enforcement. It is tempting to believe that because an action is traceable on-chain, accountability is inherently improved. In practice, transparent transaction history does not answer the more difficult question of who should bear civil, regulatory, or criminal consequences when an autonomous system has been negligently designed, carelessly deployed, or profitably ignored.
Some in the industry have suggested that AI agents may eventually need a legal status analogous to a corporation or limited liability entity. It is an intellectually interesting proposition, but it risks becoming a distraction from the immediate problem. Legal personhood does not eliminate the need for human accountability; it simply reorganises it. A company still has directors, officers, beneficial owners, compliance obligations, and enforcement pathways. An AI agent has none of those things in any meaningful moral sense. It can be paused or deleted, but it cannot be punished, deterred, or morally burdened. That means the duty of care must remain with the humans and institutions that design, deploy, finance, and profit from it.
The more practical framework is the simpler one. Responsibility should be distributed across the parties with real control and economic benefit: the developers who create the system, the operators who activate it, the platforms that knowingly facilitate its actions, and the investors or businesses that profit from its scale . Autonomy may change how decisions are executed, but it does not nullify the obligations attached to those decisions.
What should happen next is not mysterious. Developers should be required to build bounded autonomy into agentic financial systems from the start. That means kill switches, transaction thresholds, escalation paths, auditable logs, role-based permissions, and clear restrictions on when an agent may self-initiate transfers. Protocols and exchanges should create disclosure standards for when users are transacting against autonomous agents rather than human operators. Investors should stop treating governance as a secondary feature and begin underwriting it as a deployment prerequisite. If a portfolio company cannot articulate where liability sits in the event of failure, it is not ready for scaled financial autonomy.
This is not an argument against innovation. Autonomous agents will almost certainly unlock new forms of productivity, liquidity, and economic coordination. They may become indispensable in market making, treasury automation, commerce, and machine-to-machine payments. But financially consequential autonomy without clearly assigned liability is not innovation at its most courageous. It is innovation at its most adolescent.
Crypto has already lived through several cycles in which growth outran governance. The cost has usually been borne later, through enforcement shocks, reputational damage, and sudden policy reactions written by officials responding to preventable failures. If the industry repeats that pattern with agentic finance, the backlash will be broader and faster, because the public will not see the issue as a niche technical dispute. They will see software handling real money without a responsible adult in the room.
The industry still has a narrow opportunity to avoid that outcome. It can define a credible chain of liability before the first large-scale autonomous financial disaster forces others to define it instead. If AI agents are going to become counterparties in the economy, then accountability cannot remain an afterthought. Someone must own the risk before everyone inherits the consequences.
