Credit models have been shown to flag individuals as āhigh riskā based on factors like the devices they use or the apps they download. While these patterns might appear statistically valid, they often result in outcomes that raise serious ethical concerns.Ā
We must treat bias detection not as a compliance exercise but as a core business competency.Ā
The Black Box DilemmaĀ
The trend toward increasingly complex AI models has created a fundamental transparency problem. Modern AI systems are so complex that even their creators canāt always explain how they make decisions. Yet customers and regulators rightly expect clear answers.Ā

When people are denied services, they deserve clear explanations, not only to meet legal rules but because transparency is essential for treating people with dignity. How can we expect anyone to trust a system when life-changing decisions come from something no one can really understand?Ā Ā

They call to ask why, and the only answer they get is, ‘The system marked you as high risk.’ People deserve a valid explanation for decisions that shape their lives, along with the chance to challenge them and know they’re being treated fairly. Regulators are stepping in to make sure this happens. The EU’s AI Act, for instance, demands explanations for high-risk decisions, and laws like the Fair Credit Reporting Act require companies to share why decisions were made. More countries are following suit.Ā
The industry has a decision to make. It can put resources into explainable AI now or wait and face tighter regulations later that might slow innovation.Ā
Privacy Versus PersonalisationĀ
Today’s technologies rely on collecting deeply personal data. Every transaction someone makes and every way they interact with an app can reveal details about their financial health, emotional well-being, or major life events. AI can find patterns in the data it collects, which can reveal private and sensitive information.Ā
This creates a profound ethical issue. The same data that enables genuinely helpful personalization, preventing overdrafts, optimizing investments, and detecting fraud can also allow surveillance and manipulation.Ā
