TOKYO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Space Quarters Inc., a deep-tech startup originating from Tohoku University, announced today that it has raised USD 5.0 million in seed round funding. The round was led by Frontier Innovations Inc., with participation from Keio Innovation Initiative, Global Brainās Tokyu ConstructionāGB Innovation Fund, XTech Ventures, Mitsubishi UFJ Capital, and SMBC Venture Capital.
The funds will accelerate the development of space construction robotics and electron beam welding systems for assembling large-scale infrastructure in orbit and on the lunar surface ā technologies essential for establishing sustainable human activity beyond Earth.
About Space Quarters
Founded in 2022, Space Quarters is on a mission to āExpand the Potential of Humanity.ā The company develops next-generation space construction systems that enable on-site assembly of large orbital and lunar structures using proprietary robotic welding technologies.
Conventional approaches to space infrastructure rely on launching preassembled structures from Earth ā a method limited by rocket payload constraints and the risk of structural damage during launch. Space Quarters revolutionizes this paradigm by launching modular materials and autonomously assembling them in space using its in-house developed welding robot system. This approach dramatically reduces costs while enabling the creation of large, high-value, and durable space infrastructure that was previously impossible.
Since its founding, the company has engaged in joint projects with major organizations including Sky Perfect JSAT, JAXA, Obayashi Corporation, and IHI Aerospace, steadily advancing toward commercial implementation.
Purpose of the Funding
The newly raised capital will be used to:
– Strengthen and expand the development team
– Install and upgrade testing and verification facilities
– Prepare for on-orbit and lunar demonstration missions planned for 2027ā2028
Having already completed ground-based proof-of-concept tests for its core technologies, Space Quarters will now accelerate system-level development and validation in preparation for its official service launch.
