Event Set to Raise More Than $1 Million to Fund Breakthrough Breast Cancer Research as Diagnoses Rise Among Young Women
NEW YORK–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Grammy-award winning, singer-songwriter, Rachel Platten will take the stage at the Susan G. Komen® Party in Pink gala to raise her voice in support of the millions impacted by breast cancer and those who work to fight it. The October 8 event in New York City marks the beginning of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the tenth anniversary of Platten’s emotional anthem, “Fight Song.”
“We are thrilled to have Rachel join us at Party in Pink,” said Kathy Sutherland, Chair of the Party in Pink Gala, member of the Susan G. Komen Board of Directors and CEO of Golden Tree Asset Management. “’Fight Song’ has become an anthem of strength for so many in this community. On October 8, we’ll celebrate the progress we’ve made together and draw inspiration from voices like hers to keep on going.”
Susan G. Komen®, the world’s leading breast cancer organization, is one of the nation’s largest funders of breast cancer research. It also provides critical patient support and advocates for public policies that improve outcomes for people diagnosed with breast cancer.
“This disease still takes far too many lives,” Sutherland added. “One in eight women will face breast cancer, and too many are being diagnosed at younger ages. Party in Pink is about channeling that same spirit captured in ‘Fight Song’ – determination, courage and resilience – into action: funding research, supporting patients, and driving change until we achieve our mission of ending deaths from best cancer.”
BACKGROUND: Breast cancer affects 1 in 8 women in the U.S. and 1 in 1,000 men in their lifetime. In 2025 alone, an estimated 316,950 women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 42,170 women will die from the disease. Approximately 2,800 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 510 will die from it. However, some experts say one-third of breast cancer deaths in the U.S. could be prevented with universal access to modern treatments.
For the first time, more younger women are being diagnosed with breast cancer than older women. Between 2012 and 2021, diagnoses in women in their 20s grew around 2.2% per year. During that same time period, diagnoses increased 1.4% per year for women 50 and older.
