RESTON, Va., Aug. 25, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — With hurricanes becoming more frequent and more powerful, wouldn’t it be wonderful to be able to prevent the formation of hurricanes? Bruce Morton, an aerospace engineer & rocket scientist who resides in Northern Virginia and the US Virgin Islands, developed a concept and method for doing that, and holds 3 US patents (granted in 2023 & 2024) to prevent the formation of hurricanes. The concept involves beaming microwaves from a system of Solar Power Satellites onto non-symmetrical portions of a tropical depression on earth (which is a precursor to a tropical storm and then a hurricane) to destabilize it as it is trying to organize, thus preventing it from ultimately becoming a hurricane. This prevents the extensive human suffering and significant property damage resulting from hurricanes, and saves the expenditure of tens of billions of dollars spent annually by the US to mitigate the cost of hurricane damage. When not focused on a tropical depression, the microwaves can be beamed onto a solar farm on earth to generate green power in the form of electricity, which also results in a significant income stream. This significant income stream, combined with saving tens of billions of dollars spent annually to mitigate the cost of hurricane damage, helps cover the cost of launching, maintaining, and operating the system.
In 2023, Ars Technica reported that US Rep. Kevin Mullin (D-Calif) had introduced an amendment to a bill during a meeting of the Science, Space, and Technology Committee to add space-based solar power to the list for NASA and the US Department of Energy to collaborate on in key areas of research and development. He noted that Europe, Japan, China, and the United Kingdom are all studying the technology and considering in-space demonstrations. And in the United States, the California Institute of Technology recently demonstrated the ability to wirelessly transmit power in space and beam power back to Earth. “A lot of the technology that once made this source of energy the work of science fiction is now much cheaper, and easier to deploy than ever, putting it within reach,” Mullin said. “But it’s not inevitable that this promising research will become feasible at scale. There are still science and engineering hurdles to overcome. And if the United States doesn’t do it, we know our friends and global competitors will.”
