LOS GATOS, Calif., Sept. 22, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Plex, the global streaming platform that offers the most comprehensive experience for discovering, accessing, sharing, and connecting over all film, television, and streaming entertainment, launches its fifth annual Pro Week programming, beginning today. Featuring a limited-time sale for its annual subscription, the week includes a slate of hosted tutorials from Plex insiders and industry experts, alongside the roll out of newly released product features. An integration of Common Sense Media ratings and the new “Follow” user feature – are part of Plex’s commitment to make the streaming experience more seamless and support viewers’ ability to discover, access and connect over the streaming content they love. For developers, the new release of official public API documentation will make it easier than ever to build integrations and tools that talk with the Plex Media Server.

A new “Follow” feature launches today, allowing users to one-way follow other users’ activity including when they watchlist any content, rate, or review content from across the wide discoverable film and television catalogue that Plex offers. No matter what streaming platform—Netflix to Amazon to Hulu to Peacock and more, including upcoming theatrical releases and streaming content and films still in theaters—users can use universal search, create a universal watchlist, rate, and review any film or television content. For Plex, this marks one of many planned social-based features meant to drive engagement and discovery amongst its users as it strives to build a highly engaged and connected community around content. The “Follow” users feature is designed to allow users to keep up with interesting people like influencers, public accounts, or casual acquaintances without requiring reciprocation. Influencers  Alex Rabinowitz (Plex profile), Charles Jourdan (profile), Hadiyah Weaver (profile), Alex Coleman (profile), Coco (profile), Nirupam Dhakal (profile), Vetz (profile), Tiffie Starchild (profile), and Kit Lazer(profile) are among influencers who are using it immediately. Followers only see content made public by the account owner, blocking any or restricted content, unless it’s explicitly allowed by the account owner.

Common Sense Media ratings, also available beginning today in the iOS and Android mobile apps for all Plex users, makes the highly respected resource for parents accessible for free to the widest global catalogue of free streaming content yet. Drawing on more than two decades of expertise in child development and children’s media literacy, Common Sense Media uses a one-of-a-kind, research-based system to rate movies, TV shows, and more based on age appropriateness. Common Sense Media rates titles for ages two to 18, aiming to inform, educate, and guide families so they better understand what kids can handle at every age. In the Plex iOS and Android mobile apps, all users can see the Common Sense Media age and quality ratings on the details page of any title searchable on Plex, whether available for streaming or simply in Plex’s discovery catalogue to watchlist, rate and review content. Plex Pass subscribers can access all available details of the Common Sense Media reviews including the same age and quality ratings, plus detailed rationale for their ratings, as well as ratings from parents and kids, as an additional benefit of being a subscriber. The feature will become available on connected television apps in the upcoming months.

“Integrating Common Sense Media ratings into Plex for free will make our ratings, which parents rely on every day, accessible to an even wider audience,” said Common Sense Media Chief Content Officer Jill Murphy. “As parents look for high-quality movies and TV the whole family can enjoy, our ratings will make it possible for them to make the choices that are best for their kids.”

“We are excited to make it easier for the Plex community to connect with one another, and to find great content for their families, with the roll out of our Follow feature and our new Common Sense media integration,” said Keith Valory, CEO of Plex. “With over 600 free LiveTV channels, 50,000 free on-demand titles, and the ability to universally search and track content across any streaming service, we offer our customers the most comprehensive way to find, discover, and enjoy the content they love. Now we’re well on our way to helping them connect with each other to make more informed decisions about the content they want to watch, all in service of fixing the streaming struggle.”

In its fifth year, Pro Week is the industry’s preeminent independent celebration of personal media server resources, education, and engagement. This year’s content demonstrates how to better connect, share, and socialize on the expanding streaming platform with a schedule of seven unique tutorials from industry insiders. LonTV and TechnoTim are industry insiders who will join internal Plex experts to cover a range of media server topics from webhooks to custom server dashboards to how to use the Follow feature, respectively. Further, from September 21 to September 24, the Plex engineering team will host an open Fireside Chat via its forums, answering submitted questions from personal media users.

This year’s Plex Pass sale offers an annual subscription for 40% off the first year for new Plex Pass upgrades. The discount is only available until 6:59AM UTC on Saturday, September 27, 2025 for new annual subscriptions only. Also today, Plex releases official public API documentation of the Plex Media Server, built using the OpenAPI specification. For years, developers have poked, prodded, and packet-sniffed their way into building amazing tools and integrations with the Plex Media Server and today the release of this public API documentation makes this much easier. Whether building a full-featured client or just wanting to pull some metadata, this documentation provides developers and third-party clients a much clearer path.
