Domo Launches Interactive Election Tracker to Make Polling Data Accessible and Consumable

Cloud software company, Domo, announced in a company press release the launch of the Domo Election Tracker, its free, interactive resource with polling data and other relevant data sources for 2020’s presidential election between Trump and Biden.

The cloud software company explains that the free resource uses the Domo platform to help anyone see and understand data around this year’s presidential election while also enabling users to embed any of the visualizations in their own websites or operations.

Ben Schein, Vice President of data curiosity at Domo, commented on what the Election Tracker has shown by saying: “The Domo platform was designed to encourage and empower data curiosity and exploration. Domo’s work with the Coronavirus Tracker has shown the power of smart data insights shared with the public and our customer base, and the Election Tracker is an extension of the work Domo has done around the state of 2020. By taking static data around polling, campaign contributions, and COVID-19 activity, Domo brings that data together in a consumable, intuitive, and accessible format. It is our hope that users can interact with this data with curiosity, creativity, and objectivity,”

Data is becoming increasingly valuable to companies as industries look to increase the amount of data points they have on a customer for reasons that include giving a better customer experience, lower costs, or making better and quicker decisions.

Just like the cloud software company can provide insight into the election, data-driven companies can provide insight into the buying habits and trends of customers giving them an edge in a market they are in or against competition who might not have made the move to use AI capabilities.

As businesses realise this, investors are also noticing the benefits of having more data can have and proving it by taking positions in data driven companies.

Examples of these companies that have successfully raised funding include Element raising $18m to enable the data-driven digital transformation of industrial enterprises and data-driven marketing company Stirista raising $13m for its platform that enables customers to make better-informed marketing and/or advertising decisions.

The cloud software company explained how the company was built with the idea to allow users to quickly ingest new data and combine it with existing data, which is what the Election Tracker uses to visualise the data.

By having the above idea, Domo has grown to what it claims to be more than 1,800+ customers, which include L’Oreal, ESPN, and DHL, and over 100 trillion rows of data queried daily. The Domo Business Cloud platform aims to take its customer’s business intelligence processes from taking weeks, months, or more and slim it down into minutes or even seconds and at scale.

The cloud software company wrote that the Election Tracker was born from the curiosity of its public insights team – which was the team responsible for the Coronavirus Global Tracker – as they explored data and insights relative to the 2020 election.

The public insights team at the cloud software company pulled in 2020 and 2016 presidential polling data, alongside political campaign contributions, and blended those data sources with existing coronavirus data. The public insights team got to visualise the data and create the Election Tracker by leveraging its internal ETL tools, interactive visualisations, and custom-built apps.

This free resource uses the Domo Business Cloud platform to help anyone see and understand data around this year’s presidential election, and also enables users to embed any of the visualisations on their websites or operations.

The Election Tracker includes a Data Explorer feature, which enables users to filter to a specific state or day, sort the data, and export the metrics behind the interactive visualisations.

Users can drill down to view state-level details of campaign contributions, unemployment claims, and COVID-19 metrics such as mortality and new cases which can give them data points to create their own hypotheses, predictions, and deeper understanding of selected data sets.

The cloud software company explained how the Election Tracker updates every hour with aggregated polling data compiled by FiveThirtyEight from over 250 pollsters. Financial campaign contributions to candidate campaigns are also updated every hour from the Federal Elections Commission (FEC) website at the individual donor level to allow for summaries by state.

Data on COVID-19 new cases, deaths, and weekly unemployment claims come from Domo’s existing Coronavirus tracker, which includes sources such as Johns Hopkins University, Worldometer, and Federal Reserve Economic Data (FRED).
