The OSINT Gold Rush
Unfortunately, adversaries use AI just as enthusiastically – and often more creatively. Take the case of a healthcare client whose oncologist received what looked like a heartfelt email about a research collaboration. The writing mirrored her exact style – even her love of em-dashes. Moments later, a voicemail followed from a colleague with a subtle Boston accent. Both were fakes, stitched together by AI models trained on LinkedIn profiles, YouTube talks, and scraps from old HR breaches.
That’s the new reality of OSINT (open-source intelligence). What used to take weeks of stalking now happens in seconds. Public crumbs of data – a blog post, a stray conference bio – can be vacuumed up by AI and weaponized against you.
The Discipline Playbook for AI Defenders
So how do defenders hold the line in this new Wild West? By treating every AI system like a brilliant but impulsive intern: useful, but in need of strict boundaries.
- Least privilege. Give AI tools only the access they need. A log-analysis bot shouldn’t touch payroll data.
- Scrub inputs and outputs. Strip malicious prompts and redact secrets before they reach the model.
- Log obsessively. If you can’t replay what an AI agent saw or did, you can’t answer regulators or your board.
- Quarantine sensitive output. Use classifiers or human review to make sure customer or trade data never slips outside.
- Build compliance gates into the pipeline. GDPR, CCPA, HIPAA checks must be hardwired – not afterthoughts.
Shadow AI: The Copy-Paste Heist
Even companies that don’t build AI tools face hidden risks. Employees under pressure paste contracts, source code, or roadmaps into free online chatbots for “polish.” In one audit, we found that half of a firm’s staff had done this in the past 90 days.
