New framework to align business and IT priorities, reduce tech spend, and improve strategy execution
SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 1, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — The Business Architecture Guild®, a global community of business architecture practitioners, has released a new whitepaper, Business and IT Architecture Metamodel Alignment, introducing a framework that helps organizations connect business goals with technology investments to reduce wasted spend, optimize strategy execution, and drive measurable impact.
Despite significant investments in digital initiatives, nearly 70% of technology spending fails to deliver expected value, with many projects abandoned or underperforming. A key reason is the lack of structure and visibility across the strategy execution lifecycle. This whitepaper introduces a shared metamodel that links business needs with how technology is designed and deployed. Built on a business architecture foundation, the metamodel formalizes critical relationships between business capabilities, stakeholder value, supporting information, and enabling technology—giving leaders a scalable approach to ensure that every IT investment aligns with strategic goals and delivers real outcomes.
The framework enables organizations to:
- Align IT investments with business priorities
- Establish traceability from strategy to solution delivery
- Respond to change with agility and confidence
- Support enterprise-wide transformation initiatives
“Establishing this alignment perspective is a critical step toward standardizing business-driven IT related investments,” said Adam Bajer, Guild contributor. “It ensures that technical solutions are aligned with and guided by strategic intent – not isolated technical decisions.”
Richard Lay, Guild metamodel team co-lead, added, “Our goal is to formalize the interdependencies between IT and Business Architecture. Organizations will be able to more accurately capture and analyze interactions and better inform their strategic execution.”
The Guild will provide this paper as input to its standards work at the EDM Association (EDMA), formerly the Object Management Group (OMG). This paper will be presented at the Architecture-Driven Modernization (ADM) Task Force meeting in San Francisco in December as input to a request for proposal (RFP) for a new standard on business and IT architecture alignment.
