Metal Powder Works raises A$10 million and Merges with Australian Advanced Manufacturing Company

MPW and K-Tig Advanced Welding Systems Revolutionizing Advanced Metal Manufacturing
with Leading Edge Technologies

SEWICKLEY, Pa., Feb. 27, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Metal Powder Works (MPW), has merged with K-Tig Advanced Welding Systems that will see the two companies operate under the Metal Powder Works name. With both companies owning their own IP and holding several patents between them, this merger highlights their unique advanced manufacturing solutions for industry.

The new partnership has successfully raised A$10 and will be listed on the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX) under the ticker MPW. The ASX is known for its understanding of the mineral and metals market, a great fit for both companies. Metal Powder Works was formed in 2017 to introduce a more productive and cost-effective way to produce metal powder. This DirectPowder™ process is the first evolution in metal powder production in over 50 years. Since going to market in 2022, this disruptive technology has excelled at producing consistent, high-yield metal powders, including high-strength aluminum and highly conductive copper, particularly suited for defense applications.

Similar to MPW’s unique technological advantages, K-Tig’s welding system takes advantage of automation to provide accuracy, speed and cost-savings for a wide array of customers, including those in defense markets. K-Tig was born out Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO). Coincidentally, MPW CEO John Barnes was the Program Director for CSIRO’s High Performance Metals from 2011 to 2015, supporting the commercialization of many advanced manufacturing solutions, including the early evolution of K-Tig’s technology.

The coincidence of the alignment of the two companies is not lost on Barnes who noted, “Our motto when I was at CSIRO was “ore to more” and this new MPW is definitely more. This merger just makes sense when considering the demand for unique manufacturing solutions. Whether it be an expanded portfolio of metal alloys offered by MPW, or automated welding solutions provided by K-Tig, the advanced manufacturing industry is looking for these types of products to stay competitive in the global market.”

K-Tig has an extensive international distribution network, which includes a US demonstration facility in the Pittsburgh region. This geographic location is advantageous to MPW whose headquarters are located at Neighborhood 91, within minutes of Pittsburgh International Airport.

About Metal Powder Works Ltd.

MPW was founded in 2017 by aerospace and defense industry veterans with profound knowledge of additive manufacturing and powder production. Their experience with AM applications drove them to think about powder production in a revolutionary new way, resulting in the patented MPW DirectPowder™ process which produces tailorable powders in a wide variety of alloys. The MPW process represents the first true innovation in powder manufacturing in over 50 years.

In 2025, MPW assumed operations for K-Tig Advanced Welding Systems, a transformative automated welding technology born out of the Commonwealth Scientific & Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO). K-Tig technology enables customers to achieve high quality welds at a fraction of the cost, significantly changing the landscape of fabrication services.
